  • Shifting sands of the past and the present in drama of the New South Africa

Open Access•Owen Seda, Connie Rapoo•ARTICLE•South African Theatre Journal•2023

The experimental pedigree of South African drama of the anti-apartheid period requires no introduction. This pedigree was established during the years of anti-apartheid playwriting of the 1970s and 80s when South Africa's iniquitous politics of race relations was put under the spotlight on local and world stages. This was achieved through the work of playwrights such as Mbongeni Ngema, Percy Mtwa, Athol Fugard and Matsemela Manaka, among others. …

  • Ancestral rendezvous

    Connie Rapoo•ARTICLE•Critical African Studies•2023•References: 9

Young producers of popular culture in Africa are positioned at the ironic axis of lack and luxury. Enticed by the lure of hope, these cultural producers are cashing in on the power of new media and popular culture as creative resistance to marginalization and a highway to self-assertion. Owen Seda, Connie Rapoo•ARTICLE•Critical Arts•2023•References: 14

It argues that Jitney and Two Trains Running deploy highly deceptive cause-to-effect …

  • Just give us the bones!’

    Connie Rapoo•ARTICLE•Critical Arts•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Repatriations of dead African bodies, ritualistic reburials, and commemorative practices of remembering bodies elaborate African practices of cultural memory and collective identification. The repatriations of the bodily remains of Sarah Baartman, the so-called ‘Hottentot Venus’, from France to South Africa, and ‘El Negro’ from Spain to Botswana, are emblematic and define instances of such African dramas.
