Caregiving, health status and total family net worth among men and women approaching retirement age
Background and Objectives: Building on opportunity cost theory and an understanding of how gender impacts household labor decisions, this study examines how family net worth may be impacted by three variables (having a work-limiting health condition, caregiving inside the home, caregiving outside of the home) while controlling for demographic and employment-related variables for married and unmarried male and female caregivers.Research Design and…
Interprofessional Learning Opportunity Regarding Pain and the Opioid Epidemic
An interprofessional response is needed to mitigate the deleterious effects of the opioid epidemic. Here we describe an interprofessional workshop for n=307 students from social work, pharmacy, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech-language pathology designed to help prepare professionals to work competently in interprofessional teams while serving clients impacted by substance misuse. A total of n=201 participants…
Race/ethnicity, citizenship status, and crime examined through trauma experiences among young adults in the United States
Race/ethnicity, citizenship status, and trauma, have significant impact on delinquency and crime outcomes; though the reasons for some expected and unexpected crime pathways are still unanswered. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 (n = 7,103), this study found the following results: no difference in the likelihood of engagement in delinquency and crime between blacks and whites; cumulative trauma increased delinquency …
The Gender Difference in the Association Between Early Onset of Drinking and Problem Drinking Between the U.S. and Japan
Using comparable survey data from the GENACIS Project, collected from representative samples of people aged 20 to 70 years old in the U.S. (n=2,598) and Japan (n=1,734), this study examined, across these two diverse societies, the gender difference in the association between the early onset of drinking and the development of drinking problems. The results of this study suggest that there does not appear to be a cross-national causal relationship …
Deviance, Academic
Considered as a violation of academic expectations, academic deviance includes deviant behaviors unique to education and academia. Though academic misconduct by students is often emphasized, similarly fraudulent, if not more serious, violations of professional expectations also plague educators, researchers, and administrators in the education system. Academic deviance is a serious problem that has been found to be associated with academic failur…
Gender and Country Differences in Alcohol-Aggression Expectancy and Alcohol-Related Intimate Partner Violence
Alcohol use is associated with a higher rate of violent offending among males and a higher rate of violent victimization among females, especially for Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). Using comparable self-reported data from the GENACIS Project, the present study examines between the United States (n=2,363) and Japan (n=1,660) whether the expected gender difference in alcohol-related IPV is explained by alcohol-aggression expectancy. The results …
A Cross-Cultural Examination of the Disjuncture Between Aspirations and Expectations/Perceived Outcomes
Using comparable self-reported survey data collected among college students in the United States (n = 502) and Japan (n = 441), this study examines a paradox of higher academic deviance among otherwise more conforming Japanese youth while revisiting the debate concerning the disjuncture between aspirations and expectations/perceived outcomes in Agnew's general strain theory (GST). Confirming the paradox, our results indicate that Japanese student…
The Moderating Effect of Type of Deviance on the Relationships among Gender, Morality, Deviant Peers, and Deviance
Empirical research indicates that males are not only more likely to associate with deviant friends, but are also more strongly affected by such association than females. Literature to date also finds that the gendered effect of deviant association is explained by the gender difference in morality, such that weaker morality leaves males more susceptible to the effect of deviant association. This study replicates previous research but goes further …
