Rachiljam i duchy. Istoty więcej-niż-ludzkie w życiu i praktyce uzdrowicielskiej ujgurskiej szamanki w Kazachstanie
In this article I analyse, drawing on the perspective of new animism, the complex relations between spiritual healers and more-than-human beings in Central Asia. I focus on the experiences of an Uyghur shamaness, bakhshy Rakhilyam from Kazakhstan, and showthe crucial role of spirits, ancestor spirits in particular, in the practice of a healer. Their power is especially visible in future healers’ acceptance of the spirits’ calling and in the bless…
Covid-19, niepewność, lęk i nadzieja. W poszukiwaniu skutecznego leku
Interesuje mnie społeczne postrzeganie ryzyka, odmienne w różnych kontekstach społeczno-kulturowych, lecz często prowadzące do niepewności, lęku, a nawet paniki. Źródłem nadziei może by…
Health Matters, Patients and Doctors Through the Lens of Medical Anthropology. Introduction
New Psychiatry' and Traditional Healing in Kyrgyzstan
Healthcare in post-Soviet Central Asian countries, and mental healthcare in particular, has still preserved many characteristics of the previous Soviet system. In the Kyrgyz Republic, a wide-ranging reform of the healthcare system, which started in the second half of the 1990s, has not included psychiatric services in its priorities. In the face of severe deficiencies in the system, such as an over-institutionalisation of mental healthcare and a …

Risky encounters with doctors? Medical diversity and health-related strategies of the inhabitants of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan
This paper introduces the notion of 'risky encounters', referring to the way in which contacts with doctors are commonly perceived by the inhabitants of Bishkek, the capital city of Kyrgyzstan. The author's research conducted between 2011 and 2013 revealed that most people were extremely critical of biomedical personnel, despite positive assessments of healthcare reforms expressed by experts. Owing to the prevailing distrust of doctors, their int…

Mentally ill or chosen by spirits? ‘Shamanic illness’ and the revival of Kazakh traditional medicine in post-Soviet Kazakhstan
This article discusses spiritual healing in post-Soviet Kazakhstan with reference to changing discourses about ‘shamanic illness’: a condition that afflicts the future healer. What had traditionally been identified as the call of spirits was seized in the Soviet period by biomedical discourse which ascribed those symptoms to mental illness. Whereas this attitude also influenced popular understandings of ‘shamanic illness’ at the time, traditional…

Korean medicine in Kazakhstan
Since the 1990s, after gaining independence by the Republic of Kazakhstan, various complementary therapies have grown rapidly there. Korean medicine in its several forms belongs among them. There is an important population of Korean deportees from Stalinist times, but this paper will show that the various forms of Korean medicine practised in Almaty, Kazakhstan's former capital, do not primarily cater for ethnic Koreans. Rather, as the paper demo…
