Cultural adaptation of an eating disorders measure for South Asian American women
new items to tap into culturally influenced constructs that likely impact ED presentations. Ultimately, this tool can enhance understanding of the nature, presentation, and cultural variation of EDs in SAs. This study is also one of the first to demonstrate how other clinical scientists can culturally adapt measures without translation

Nutrient Intake During School Lunch in Title I Elementary Schools With Universal Free Meals
BACKGROUND: The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides >30 million meals to children daily; however, the specific nutrient composition of NSLP-selected and consumed meals for students from lower income and racial/ethnic minoritized backgrounds is unknown. AIMS: To quantify the nutrients in school lunch selection and consumption among students participating in the NSLP and compare these values to nutrient recommendations. METHOD: = 1,102 im…
BMI and Disordered Eating in Black College Women: The Potential Mediating Role of Body Appreciation and Moderating Role of Ethnic Identity
Multiple studies indicate Black American women have disproportionately higher rates of obesity compared with other groups in United States. Although body image is associated with obesity, this relation is understudied among Black women. The purpose of the current study was to (1) examine the relations among body appreciation, body dissatisfaction and disordered eating; (2) assess body appreciation as a mediator of the relation between body mass i…
What will people say?”: Mental health stigmatization as a barrier to eating disorder treatment-seeking for South Asian American women
This study used focus group methodology to identify culturally-specific barriers to, and facilitators of, eating disorder (ED) treatment-seeking for South Asian (SA) American women. Seven focus groups were conducted with 54 participants ( M age =20.11 years, SD =2.52), all of whom had lived in the United States (US) for at least three years (63.0% of the sample was born in the US). Transcripts were independently coded by a team of researchers ( n…

Body Image and Eating Disorders Among South Asian American Women: What Are We Missing
This study used focus group methodology to examine South Asian (SA) American women's conceptualizations of eating disorders (EDs) and body dissatisfaction, and their perspectives regarding cultural influences on these conditions. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, seven focus groups were conducted ( N = 54, mean age = 20.11 years, SD = 2.52). Themes ( n = 15) were organized according to the amended objectification theory framework. Women d…
An Examination of Adolescents' Values in a Motivational Interviewing-based Obesity Intervention
Objectives: In this paper, we examine values selected by adolescents as part of a motivational interviewing (MI) weight loss intervention. Methods: During a values clarification activity, adolescents (N = 52; 75.0% girls; 78.4% African-American; mean age = 13.5 ± 1.8 years; mean body mass index (BMI) = 36.8 ± 6.4 kg/m2) selected their top 5 values. Using MI, interventionists explored selected values with adolescents and related them to target beh…
Testing a Moderated Mediation Model of Objectification Theory among Black Women in the United States: The Role of Protective Factors
Engaging with the Richmond Community to Reduce Pediatric Asthma Disparities: Findings from a Community‐engaged Needs Assessment
Childhood asthma disparities persist, with children living in low-income areas experiencing worse morbidity. We partnered with a community-academic research team and stakeholders to conduct a needs assessment to understand barriers and supports to asthma treatment. We convened a community advisory board, comprised of parents of children with asthma, youth with asthma, and members of key community organizations. Two focus groups with parents of ch…
Psychological and behavioral effects of obesity prevention campaigns
Public health campaigns are often used to prevent or reduce obesity. However, social psychological theory suggests these efforts might not be universally helpful and could potentially have detrimental consequences. This investigation explored the effects of obesity prevention campaigns. Participants were randomized to view either weight-focused or weight-neutral campaigns. Assessments at three time points (pre, post, and follow-up) examined the d…
“I don’t need people to tell me I’m pretty on social media: ” A qualitative study of social media and body image in early adolescent girls
An Investigation of Body Appreciation, Ethnic Identity, and Eating Disorder Symptoms in Black Women
Positive body image, such as body appreciation or acceptance, has gone largely unexamined in women of color in comparison with more pathological body attitudes. In an effort to promote and extend positive body image research, this study examined the reliability and validity of the Body Appreciation Scale (BAS) in Black college women, as well as the relation between ethnic identity and body appreciation. Participants were 228 Black college women (…
Racial variations in binge eating, body image concerns, and compulsive exercise among men
Binge eating in young men is associated with obesity and metabolic dysfunction, as well as disordered eating attitudes and behaviors. Although preliminary research suggests that Asian American males might be more likely to binge eat and report body image concerns compared with men of other races/ethnicities, few studies have investigated racial variations in this disordered eating behavior and its correlates. The goal of the current study was to …
Relations Among Teasing, Body Satisfaction, Self-Esteem, and Depression in Treatment-Seeking Obese African American Adolescents
The objective of this study was to examine correlates of weight-based teasing, self-esteem, and depression among 119 treatment-seeking obese African American adolescents aged 11 to 18 years. Body satisfaction was examined as a potential mediator of the association between teasing and self-esteem and teasing and depression. Study participants (mean age = 13.9 years; 72% female) completed measures evaluating teasing, self-esteem, depression, and bo…

Evaluation of a Structural Model of Objectification Theory and Eating Disorder Symptomatology Among European American and African American Undergraduate Women
The current study evaluated a structural equation model of objectification theory among European American (n = 408) and African American women (n = 233). Modeling results indicated a particularly strong association between thin-ideal internalization/body monitoring and eating disorder symptoms, with weaker relationships among body dissatisfaction, depression, anxiety, and eating disorder symptoms. The measurement model was not equivalent for Euro…
Anxiety, Alexithymia, and Depression as Mediators of the Association between Childhood Abuse and Eating Disordered Behavior in African American and European American Women
This study evaluated structural equation models of the associations among family functioning, childhood abuse, depression, anxiety, alexithymia, and eating disorder symptomatology in a sample of 412 European American and 192 African American female undergraduates. Additionally, the specific roles of anxiety, depression, and alexithymia as mediators were assessed. Each of these variables was a significant mediator of the association between childh…
