Municipal Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services in an Age of Migration and Superdiversity
The goals of promoting diversity, equity and inclusion have gained currency in planning practice, and institutions are increasingly expected to address structural inequalities related to race, ethnicity and other forms of marginalization. This article examines how six Canadian municipalities have adapted their parks, recreation and culture strategic plans, policies, programs and services in response to international migration and racial diversity…
Engaging Youths across the Education Divide: Is There a Role for Social Capital
This study draws on the 2013 General Social Survey to investigate whether social capital is positively associated with the political participation and engagement of 15- to 24-year-old Canadians. It also assesses whether social capital can help overcome the participation gap between youths with different educational qualifications. Trust in family was the only social tie that was positively associated with the turnout of eligible voters in federal…

A nice place to visit: Italy as seen by Canadians
This article analyses Canadian perceptions of Italy at the governmental and societal levels. It argues that Canadians pay relatively little attention to things Italian and that their images of Italy are somewhat stereotypical. Italian politics do not receive much attention and when they do, domestic political aspects prevail over foreign policy ones. The Canadian press represents Italy as a country with a cultural and artistic past, an economic s…
Family, Religion, and Civic Engagement in Canada
This article examines whether the family and religious networks and attachments that are central to the migration experience facilitate the political and civic integration of foreign-born Canadians. Using data from the 2002 Ethnic Diversity Survey, we investigate whether immigrants and newcomers who are more closely integrated into these networks are also more likely to vote in national and sub-national elections and to join voluntary association…

Elections
Elections, John C. Courtney, Vancouver: UBC Press, 2004, pp. ix, 201.The expansion of the number of democratic regimes around the world and the decline of trust in government in established democracies have renewed interest in election laws and how these rules define the national community, allow citizens to express their preferences, and influence the composition of legislatures. In Canada, the study of electoral laws has frequently dealt with h…
Between Globalism and Localism, Italian Style
Survey and historical evidence reveal that Italians have emerged as the European masters of multiple loyalties, balancing relatively weak levels of state nationalism with strong affinities for sub-state, continental and global identities and institutions. These distinctive patterns can be traced to elite opinion leadership, the perceived material and psychological benefits derived from the European movement, and the legacy of the First Republic's…
How Transnational Factors Influence the Success of Ethnic, Religious and Regional Parties in 21 States
This article explores whether ethnic, religious and regional parties in 21 advanced capitalist democracies are more likely to achieve political salience in systems which have been more exposed to the effects of globalization and post-industrialization. Globalist—localist scholars have argued that the new localism — which encompasses the post-war resurgence of decentralist political movements — is linked to intensified international interdependenc…
From Communitarian Protest towards Institutionalization: The Evolution of `Hybrid' Parties in Canada and Italy
Lawson and Merkl have identified four alternative organizations that emerge when major parties fail to provide linkage with electorates. They include communitarian parties, which target their appeals to demographic subgroups, and supplementary parties, which champion general issues that have been ignored by established parties. Italy's Lega Nord and the Canadian Reform Party are two parties that have distanced themselves from their `communitarian…
