  • Learning from the Colors of Fantasy

    Eva Friedlander, Eli Friedlander•ARTICLE•boundary 2•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 6

The present essay lays out the central themes in Walter Benjamin’s account of fantasy and its place in the world of the child. It seeks to distinguish a learning from fantasy from what is often called learning from experience. Establishing this distinction leads me to develop in some detail the peculiar concept of a receptive imagination (which Benjamin calls “fantasy”). I set out to contrast it with an active or constructive notion of imaginatio…

  • Walter Benjamin on Photography and Fantasy

    Eva Friedlander, Eli Friedlander•ARTICLE•Critical Horizons•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 1

The essay provides a commentary on Walter Benjamin’s “News from Flowers”, a review of the album of plant photography of Karl Blossfeldt. I place Benjamin’s account of Blossfeldt’s achievement both in relation to Goethe’s studies of the vegetal realm as well as to the fantasy world of Grandville’s Animated Flowers. This juxtaposition allows me to interpret Benjamin’s understanding of the possibilities opened by photography and the transformation i…

  • Matters of Life

    Eva Friedlander, Eli Friedlander•ARTICLE•boundary 2•2016

This essay reflects on the questions introduced by Howard Eiland and Michael Jennings's biography Walter Benjamin: A Critical Life. In particular, it considers how the biography addresses the difficult problem of drawing together a unity of life and writings in Benjamin's existence. It further seeks to assess how the conception, implicit in their book, of the relation of writing and life relates to Benjamin's own understanding of the nature of th…

  • Between Communicability and Common Sense

Eva Friedlander, Eli Friedlander•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Aesthetics•2016

In my commentary, I argue that Ginsborg’s understanding of the primitive normativity in reflective aesthetic judgement should be broadened to account for further characterizations of the judgement of taste given in Kant’s ‘Analytic of the Beautiful’. In particular, I stress the distinction between the consideration of universal communicability, on which Ginsborg focuses, and Kant’s account of common sense. Understanding how the latter notion has …

  • Assuming Violence

    Eva Friedlander, Eli Friedlander•ARTICLE•boundary 2•2015•Cited by: 3

The task of the present commentary on “Critique of Violence” is to bring to light a progression in Walter Benjamin's essay that has important implications for the assessment of the essay's content. One should not take violence as a generic term and view the essay as enumerating different species of it. Rather, Benjamin establishes a hierarchy of forces with inner dependence whose logic, to put it initially as simply as possible, is one of arrogat…

Eva Friedlander, Eli Friedlander•ARTICLE•Revue internationale de philosophie•2011•Cited by: 1

A distinctive feature of Cavell's reading of the Philosophical Investigations is the extent to which he takes Wittgenstein's account of language to constitute a translation of the Kantian project of laying out the conditions of possibility of experience, "so that it speaks not alone of deducing twelve categories of the understanding but of deriving - say schematizing - every word in which we speak together "(Conditions Handsome and Unhandsome, p.…

  • The Measure of the Contingent

    Eva Friedlander, Eli Friedlander•ARTICLE•boundary 2•2008•Cited by: 6

The present essay sketches in broad outlines the philosophical armature of Walter Benjamin's Arcades Project by analyzing the central theoretical notion in that incomplete manuscript of his: the dialectical image. So as to bring out the uniqueness of Benjamin's use of image, I consider his account of its relation to language. Rather than setting an opposition between language and image, I argue that language is the medium in which the dialectical…
