  • Imperialization of street names as part of the cultural appropriation of urban space in late imperial Vilnius

    Open Access•Darius Staliūnas•ARTICLE•Urban History•2025

This article combines approaches from critical place-name studies and the ‘imperial turn’ to examine the perception of Vilnius and the so-called Northwestern Region as Russian ‘national territory’ rather than merely an imperial possession. In the second half of the nineteenth century, to counter the significant Polish influence, the tsarist elite intensified the ‘imperialization’ of Vilnius’ cityscape more than in other borderland towns. Meanwhil…

  • Education Policy in the Kingdom of Poland after 1905

    Open Access•Darius Staliūnas•ARTICLE•The Russian Review•2025

This article reinforces the historiographical interpretation that highlights the negative consequences of the nationalizing Russian Empire for its western borderlands and shows that Tsarist nationality policy in the Kingdom of Poland had reached an impasse. It argues that educational policy powerfully highlights the limits of the empire in the Kingdom of Poland, regardless of its chosen policy. A more liberal policy, according to officials, riske…

  • Why Catholics rebel

    Darius Staliūnas•ARTICLE•Canadian Slavonic Papers•2022•References: 12

This article asks why the Russian Empire’s closure of hundreds of Catholic monasteries, convents, and churches in the early and mid-nineteenth century proceeded without major incidents, while in the 1880s and 1890s it met with grassroots resistance. The article specifically deals with tsarist authorities’ closure of the Benedictine convent and church in Kražiai in 1893, which provoked the fierce resistance of parishioners. The Kražiai case grew i…

  • Encyclopedia of Romantic Nationalism in Europe

Joep Leerssen, Inge Adriansen et al.•BOOK•Encyclopedia of Romantic…•2018

This encyclopedia documents the presence and impact of nationalized cultural consciousness in European nationalism. It tracks how intellectuals, historians, philologists, novelists, poets, painters, folklorists, and composers, in an intensely collaborative transnational network, articulated the national identities and aspirations that would go on to determine European history and politics, with effects that are still felt today. Edited by Joep Le…

  • Affirmative Action in the Western Borderlands of the Late Russian Empire

    Open Access•Darius Staliūnas•ARTICLE•Slavic Review•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 12

This article argues that apart from a couple of cases, there were no situations where the Russian imperial government would have supported Lithuanian national culture as a counterbalance against Poles, and more generally, that the policy of "divide and rule" was in principle not applied on the empire's western periphery regarding other non-dominant ethnic groups. A more general reason for not implementing such a policy was related to many officia…

  • Enemies for a Day

    Darius Staliūnas•BOOK•Enemies for a Day•2015

Secondly, it tries to identify the structural preconditions as well as specific triggers that turned anti-Jewish feelings into collective violence and analyzes the nature of t…

  • How insulted religious feelings turned into pogroms

    Darius Staliūnas•ARTICLE•East European Jewish Affairs•2013

This article is devoted to a single wave of anti-Jewish violence in Lithuania which spread through northern Lithuania during the first half of the summer of 1900. It claims that specific incidents that took place during the first half of 1900 at Konstantinovo (news of an allegedly kidnapped girl, the so-called Jewish “procession” and a domestic dispute between Jews and the priest's workmen) were among the most important reasons for the pogroms. A…

  • Dusetos, Easter 1905

    Darius Staliūnas•ARTICLE•Journal of Baltic Studies•2012•References: 6

This article analyzes the causes, development, and consequences of the Dusetos pogrom on Easter Monday 1905. Although the dynamic of the pogrom and the circumstances surrounding it fit to a great extent the typical model of such incidents within the empire and the whole mass of anti-Jewish stereotypes, in all major characteristics (causes, duration, number of people involved, intensity of violence, number of victims, etc.) it followed a rather co…

  • About Some Dissertations Devoted to the Lithuanian National Movement Defended at Foreign Educational Institutions

    Open Access•Darius Staliūnas•ARTICLE•Lithuanian Historical Studies•2012

Over the recent decades in Western Europe and the United States, more than one doctoral dissertation connected in one way or another with the subject of Lithuanian nationalism (the National Movement) has been defended 2 .Some of these studies are important not only to foreign researchers who do not know the Lithuanian language, but also to Lithuanian scholars. Some of these theses are serious academic studies, it is true, on fairly narrow topics. …

These years saw the transformation of both Jewish and Lithuanian political life. Within the Jewish community, the previously dominant integrationists were now challenged both by those who believed that the Jews were not a religious but an ethnic or proto-nationalist group and those who believed th…

Alvydas Nikžentaitis, Stefan Schreiner et al.•BOOK•The Vanished World of Lithuanian…•2004

The Lithuanian Jews, Litvaks, played an important and unique role not only within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, but in a wider context of Jewish life and culture in Eastern Europe, too. The changing world around them at the end of the nineteenth century and during the first decades of the twentieth had a profound impact not only on the Jewish communities, but also on a parallel world of the “others,” that is, those who lived with them side …

  • Nationality Statistics and Russian Politics in the Mid-Nineteenth Century

    Open Access•Darius Staliūnas•ARTICLE•Lithuanian Historical Studies•2003

In the first half of the nineteenth century the polyethnic nature of the Russian Empire was not a serious problem for its ruling elite. However, ongoing modernization processes and various nationality problems forced the government to pay attention to the ethnic variety of the state. Endeavours to rule the large empire more effectively and certain political reasons led to the taking of nationality censuses. The present paper deals with the causes…

It investigates the social content of the concept of ‘the Pole’ in the Northwest Territory in the 1860s, in the interpretation of state officials and influential publicists. The study is also to reveal the treatment of the Lithuanians and Belorussians (i.e., peasants) and to establish whether they were treated as the allies of the regime or identified with ‘the Poles’. A conclus…
