Recebe…
Les peuplements antérieurs à 20 000 ans en Amériques
In this article, we outline a general reflection on the early peopling of the Americas, based on the main characteristics of this topic within the praxis of Americanist prehistory. We illustrate this reflection through a response to the critical review published in the second issue of volume 118 of the Bulletin de la Société préhistorique française
The First Fishtail Point Find in Piauí State, Northeastern Brazil
Here we report a newly discovered Fishtail, or Fell 1, projectile-point type, from Coronel José Dias, southern Piauí, northeastern Brazil. It is an almost complete bifacial piece on light local silex. In Brazil, Fishtail points have not been previously reported in detail north of the 22° S parallel. Hence, this new evidence importantly establishes human occupation of extreme northeast of South America during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition
Formation Processes of the Late Pleistocene Site Toca da Janela da Barra do Antonião – Piauí (Brazil)
Archaeological research of late Pleistocene sites in northeastern Brazil has rarely analyzed site formation processes from a geoarchaeological perspective. This has contributed to the long-held debate over the reliability of Pleistocene ages and the anthropic origin of stone tools and combustion features. In this work, we combine high-resolution geoarchaeological methods to study the formation processes of the Toca da Janela da Barra do Antonião …
Another “Critique,” Same Old Song
This comment is a brief response to the bibliographic review made by Gómez Coutouly in this issue of PaleoAmerica. We reaffirm that the anthropic nature of the Pleistocene sites in the southeast of Piauí has already been demonstrated. Based on this, we show how many skeptics with mainstream thinking reproduce a scientific ideology regarding the peopling of the Americas
Cobbles, tools, and plants
The Chiquihuite Cave, a Real Novelty? Observations about the Still-ignored South American Prehistory
The recently reported discovery of cultural evidence at Chiquihuite Cave (Zacatecas, Mexico), produced by humans of at least 26,500 calendar years ago, is a major advance in research into early human occupations in the Americas. Thirteen of the 239 lithic artifacts recovered from the SC-C stratigraphic component, dated during and before the Last Glacial Maximum, are illustrated in Ardelean et al. (2020. “Evidence of Human Occupation in Mexico aro…
Alteridades técnicas no Brasil Pleistocênico
New Data on a Pleistocene Archaeological Sequence in South America
Sítio do Meio, discovered in the 1990s, showed a sedimentary sequence clearly composed of two sets of deposits separated by a zone of large rockfall from the massive collapse of the shelter's overhang. The bottom set, slightly more than 60 cm thick, was trapped between the bedrock (upon which it rested) and the lower part of the roof fall (reaching more than 1 m in the excavation area), and yielded some charcoal without other archaeological mater…
