  • Isha's Wait

    Open Access•Garima Jaju•ARTICLE•Cultural Anthropology•2025•Cited by: 2

Isha waits in her low-income parents' home for her estranged husband, charged for dowry and domestic violence, to pay her the legally mandated maintenance money. I listen to her as she talks about pyaar, or love, and domestic violence as arising from the absence of its ehsaas, or feeling/realization, by the abusive husband. The awaited money is infused with the hopeful imagination that it will generate both pyaar and its ehsaas. I argue that mone…

  • Product, equipment, uniform

    Open Access•Garima Jaju•ARTICLE•Modern Asian Studies•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 42

The article focuses on how low and lower-middle class youth employed in new private sector jobs in the booming service economy in Indian cities engage with the material environment of their workplace, and how, through their 'aesthetic scrutiny' of its materiality, come to 'consume' work. The setting is the store floor of a fast-expanding organized retail company, called Spexy, that sells budget eyewear products. Through ethnographic elaboration, …

  • Extra-terrestrial landings

    Open Access•Garima Jaju•ARTICLE•Ethnography•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 31

The field site is the retail showrooms of a fast-expanding organized retail company selling budget eyewear products across shopping malls and high streets of urban India. Through a thick description of 14 months of ethnographic fieldwork - arriving, forging social relations, recording and writing - this article traces the practical, ethical and epistemological paradoxes in doing ethnography. The article identifies these paradoxes as inherent to e…

  • The play of 'dirty politics

    Open Access•Garima Jaju•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Anthropologica…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 45

This article explores the tensed sociality amongst precariously employed service economy workers in the retail outlets of a prominent eyewear company in New Delhi, India. The bickering staff label the ongoing interpersonal strife 'dirty politics'. Linked to this are their confident assertions that, in fact, all politics is dirty, and dirty politics is the only type of politics possible - rejecting formal party politics and labour unions as morall…

  • The cultural production of an ‘employable person’

    Garima Jaju•ARTICLE•Contemporary South Asia•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 9

Madrasas are increasingly being reformed across South Asia with the intended aim of ‘social change’ through mainstreaming its marginalized Muslim population. While the transformative change, as promised in policy and popular discourse, remains distant, a vernacular cultural variant of this ‘change’ is intimately felt in the changing subjectivities of the students. As future holders of degrees now recognized by the government, the students imagine…
