  • Linguistic Rhythm and its Meaning

Radan Martinec•ARTICLE•Linguistics and the Human Sciences•2020

Linguistic rhythm has generally not been considered to realize semantic units.Exceptions are van Leeuwen (1992) and Martinec (1996, 2000, 2002). This articledevelops further Martinec’s hierarchical model of rhythm by relating it to semanticfields. The semantic units realized by rhythmic units in his model are wavesof import, which belong to the textual metafunction (see e.g. Halliday and Matthiessen,2014). They are shown to be mapped onto semanti…

  • A multimodal and socio-semiotic theory of early language evolution

    Radan Martinec•ARTICLE•Social Semiotics•2020•References: 13

This paper presents a multimodal and socio-semiotic theory of early evolution of language. It argues that the evolution of spoken language was multimodal but that the emergence of its experiential meanings, including those of transitivity, as well as of the associated semantic and formal units, was helped by similar meanings and units being formed earlier and more easily in gestures. The role of rhythm in this process is also discussed. The index…

  • Nascent and mature uses of a semiotic system: The case of image–text relations

    Open Access•Radan Martinec•ARTICLE•Visual Communication•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 4

This article first develops the system of image–text relations introduced in Martinec and Salway’s (2005) article – ‘A system for image–text relations in new (and old) media’) – mainly by focusing on the motivated quality of the relationship between the system’s meanings and realizations. This motivatedness points to the system’s being mature rather than nascent. The article then focuses on nascent uses of the image–text relations system, i.e. us…

  • A system for image-text relations in new (and old) media

    Radan Martinec•ARTICLE•Visual Communication•2005•Cited by: 43•References: 3

This article presents a generalized system of image–text relations which applies to different genres of multimodal discourse in which images and texts co-occur. It combines two kinds of relations – the relative status of images and text, and how they relate to one another in terms of logico–semantics. Every instance of an image–text combination in the data sample is described by a selection of features from the system. The units of images and tex…

  • Gestures that co‐occur with speech as a systematic resource: The realization of experiential meanings in indexes

    Radan Martinec•ARTICLE•Social Semiotics•2004•Cited by: 13•References: 4

This paper presents a model of systematic correspondences between meanings and forms of experientially functioning gestures that co‐occur with speech. It argues that such gestures are compositional, consisting of formal choices at different ranks, which realize choices of types of processes and circumstances in the semantics. This approach to gestures is contrasted with the currently predominant approach according to which gestures that co‐occur …

  • The Social Semiotics of Text and Image in Japanese and English Software Manuals and Other Procedures

    Radan Martinec•ARTICLE•Social Semiotics•2003•Cited by: 4

This paper presents a comparative analysis of text and images in Japanese and English software manuals, recipes and other procedures. The Japanese procedures are found to be more elaborate in the extent to which they engage the reader/viewer, in the degree of detail with which they represent the portrayed action, and in the explicitness of marking the procedures' stages. An attempt is made to account for these differences by reference to differen…

  • Concept evaluation in focus groups: Semantic fields and evaluative strategies

    Open Access•Radan Martinec•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2003•References: 10

  • Rhythmic hierarchy in monologue and dialogue

    Radan Martinec•ARTICLE•Functions of Language•2002

This paper presents a hierarchical model of rhythm and shows its functioning in both monologue and dialogue. Rhythm is seen as articulating speech in both linguistic expression and content, at several levels simultaneously. Each one of the rhythmic levels is formed by rhythmic waves and transitions. Isochrony within waves at one level is formed by periodic occurrences of wave accents from the next-lower level or from a level further below. Since …

  • Interpersonal resources in action

    Open Access•Radan Martinec•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2001

  • Construction of Identity in Michael Jackson's Jam

    Radan Martinec•ARTICLE•Social Semiotics•2000•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This paper presents a partial account of a systemic - functional semiotics of action and applies it to an analysis of a Michael Jackson video clip, Jam . Two action patterns are identified in Jam : phases and foregrounding. The phases chart the development of the action in the video, and foregrounding forms the basis of an interpretation in terms of themes having to do with construction of identity. An effort is made to make explicit the interpre…

  • Rhythm in Multimodal Texts

    Radan Martinec•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2000•Cited by: 2

The author presents a hier-archical model of rhythm in lan-guage, music and action and ap-plies it to the integration of these semiotic modes in multimodal texts. The model distinguishes be-tween rhythm and meter; meter is shown to synchronize the rhyth-mic hierarchies of musical instru-ments, as well as of voice, music and action. The author identifies the meanings conveyed by variet-ies of multimodal synchronization

  • Types of process in action

    Open Access•Radan Martinec•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2000•Cited by: 8

  • Cohesion in action

    Open Access•Radan Martinec•ARTICLE•Semiotica•1998•Cited by: 3
