Famine in East Africa
Social Organization, Resource Management, and Child Nutrition in the Taita Hills, Kenya
A comparative and longitudinal ecological analysis is used to explore agricultural sources of variation in child nutritional status in the Taita Hills, Kenya. National policies, formal institutions, the natural environment, and the local-level social organization of agricultural resource access define the agrarian context within which distinct production strategies emerge. The effects of alternative production choices on child nutrition are neith…

The method of log-linear nested hierarchies is applied, which permits us to conclude that social change in this group takes the form of caste-determined occupational mobility. Of wider significance is the demonstration that relatively uncomplicated quantitative methods can add materially to the strength of the c…
Nutrition, Consumption, and Agricultural Change
D EVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE IS INTENDED, typically, to . . enable the poor . . . in developing countries to meet their basic human needs on a sustainable basis (USAID 1978). One of the most basic needs of the poor in less developed countries is adequate nutrition (see World Bank 1978). Most programs of agricultural and rural development are intended, directly or indirectly, to improve the nutritional status of disadvantaged populations (see USAID 197…
The role of wild foliage plants in the diet
While most human societies make some use of wild plants in the diet, there have been few systematic studies of the extent to which such plants are actually consumed, or of their nutritional significance. Data gathered in Lushoto District, Tanzania, indicate that vegetable relishes prepared from the foliage of wild plants are an integral and essential element in the diet of the Shambaa people at all seasons of the year. Introduced cultivated veget…

While most human societies make extensive use of wild greens and fruits in the diet, there have been few systematic studies of the extent to which such plants are actually consumed, or of their nutritional significance. Data gathered in the course of anthropological fieldwork among the Shambaa people of the Usambara Mountains, Tanzania, indicate that these plants are an important element in the local diet and contribute significantly to nutrition…
