  • Small Peace

    Open Access•Paul Smoker•ARTICLE•Journal of Peace Research•1981•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Peace may be conceived of not only as the absence of physical or structural violence, but also positively as harmony between culture and structure. In that case, the values of a society must be known in order for us to assess the degree of peace. Since 'small peace' presupposes a shared symbolic reality, most instances existing today are small — e. g., religious communities — and 'world peace' will have to consist of a multitude of 'small peaces'…

  • A Vietnam Simulation: A Report On the Canadian/English Joint Project

Open Access•John Macrae, Paul Smoker•ARTICLE•Journal of Peace Research•1967•Cited by: 1

This paper begins with a discussion of models in which two complementary sets of ideas are contrasted. The first set of ideas come from a political scientist, and the second set from an operational researcher. This discussion of models leads naturally to a consideration of simulations from the same two points of view. A difference between the two particular views presented here is that the political scientist views simulation as a model, while th…

  • Nation State Escalation and International Integration

    Open Access•Paul Smoker•ARTICLE•Journal of Peace Research•1967•Cited by: 8

A model of world affairs is defined which identifies two interacting systems. The first system is called a nation state system, in which nations are the only actors. The second system is called an international system, in which there are many actors, from individuals to nations to international organizations and corporations. The world system is defined as the amalgam of these two. Within nations, the four functional requirements of Parsons are u…

  • Trade, Defence and the Richardson Theory of Arms Races: A Seven Nation Study

    Open Access•Paul Smoker•ARTICLE•Journal of Peace Research•1965•Cited by: 8•References: 4

The trade patterns for the seven nations USA, USSR, UK, China, Western Germany, Poland and France are examined using a directional trade ratio, and 10 polarization properties of this system of nations are suggested. The degree of polarization of each of the twenty-one two-nation subsystems comprising the whole system is calculated using the findings from the trade analysis. An n-nation interaction model is then constructed which uses the idea of …
