Least Trimmed Squares: Cointegration and Outliers
When applying the cointegrated autoregressive distributed lag model it is common to include indicator variables for outliers. This is often done in a somewhat ad hoc way. Least Trimmed Squares estimation provides a more systematic approach. This estimator is robust to a large number of outliers of many types. We analyse the estimator in a model that allows a range of contamination and show that it has the same asymptotic properties as the infeasi…
Two-sample Age-period-cohort Models
Age-period-cohort analysis is often done in the context of two samples. This could be samples for women and men or for two countries. It is of interest to ask if some time effects could be common across samples. We clarify how the well-known age-period-cohort problem for one sample carries over to the two sample situation. This is done through a reparametrization in terms of parameters that are invariant to the identification issues. The new para…

Imitations and Transformations: On Side Effects of the ADHD Epidemic
The attention deficit hyperactivity disorder epidemic has been the subject of much scrutiny, especially in relation to the medicalization of children, and, to a lesser degree, to the use of Ritalin as a performance enhancer or party drug (e.g., Keane 2008; Whitaker 2010; Bowden 2013). In this article, my focus is on non-investigated side effects of this epidemic, namely the use of (prescription) Ritalin among heavy drug users. Based on fieldwork …
Offender and/or client? Fuzzy institutional identities in prison-based drug treatment in Denmark
The last 20 years has witnessed a rise in prison-based drug treatment in Nordic countries. This increase has challenged the prominence of the punitive prison, and created changes in the roles of both clients and staff. This article explores the development of two institutional inmate identities: the offender and the client, which have occurred as a consequence of this shift in prison policy. However, in their institutional narratives and daily pr…

Addiction, Drugs, and Experimentation: Methadone Maintenance Treatment Between “In Here” and “Out There”
In Denmark, outpatient substitution treatment has traditionally been associated with a great deal of ambivalence and control. Until the late 1990s, a condition for entering substitution treatment was that the user ceased using illicit drugs. Failure to comply would in many cases mean expulsion from treatment. However, since the late 1990s/early 2000s, a more liberal substitution treatment policy has developed, which recognizes continued attachmen…

Rationalities of Choice and Practices of Care: Substitution Treatment in Denmark
As in many Western countries, notions of active, free, and self-managing citizens have become key concerns in Danish social policies. This article describes how these key concerns have made their inroads into laws and guidelines for delivery of social welfare services and how these laws and guidelines are intended to be implemented in social work practices. In the first part of the article, we analyze how policies envision drug users as active, f…
Empowered and self-managing users in methadone treatment
Empowerment is a keyword in treatment. Users should have the means and possibilities to influence their treatment and become self-managing. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in a Danish methadone treatment project, we find that the practices of users and staff are often not carried out in accordance with governmental intentions. We identify a gap between the official notions of treatment and practices. We analyse the notions and practices of empo…
Unesco and the 'right' kind of culture: Bureaucratic production and articulation
There has been much debate on 'culturespeak' and the politics of culture, but the bureaucratic articulation of specific representations of culture has not received much attention. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, this article presents a double take on bureaucracy. On the one hand, I focus on the outcome of UNESCO's bureaucracy: UNESCO promotes an all-inclusive culture perspective for 'We the Peoples of the United Nations', but there are limits …
Post-Soviet structures, path-dependency and passivity in Chukotkan coastal villages
Based on examples from Chukotka's history, this article focuses on a comparison between the early Soviet period and the years following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, in order to analyse points of distinction and surprising similarities between the two periods. This article compares the events of the two periods and uses the concept of "path-dependency" as an analytical tool to explain the discrepancy between statements of democracy/market-…

Similarity Issues in Cointegration Analysis
Usually cointegration models involve a dynamic, stochastic component as well as deterministic components. This paper identifies relevant cointegration models in terms of interpretability and similarity with respect to parameters of deterministic components. Similarity implies that inference on cointegration rank or common trends can be separated from inference on parameters of deterministic components. The idea is that the functional form and the…
Asymptotic Inference on Cointegrating Rank in Partial Systems
The likelihood ratio test for cointegrating rank is analyzed for partial (or conditional) systems in the vector autoregressive error-correction model. Under the assumption of weak exogeneity for the cointegrating parameters, the asymptotic distributions are given and tables of critical values are provided. A discussion is given of some of the assumptions of the model, why they are needed, and how they are tested
