Of fields and of factories
This article explores state-association dynamics in large quality sectors, focusing specifically on the institutionalization of power across production networks. I demonstrate how incentives for high value-added production emerge when normally competitive production actors organize to solve their problems and speak together with one voice to shape policy through a bureaucratically powerful state apparatus. Despite historical differences in both s…
Reconquer and divide
Food standards, which are used to signal adherence to sustainability goals or a specific origin, have deep political implications. Standards crafted by retailers, processors, or third-party actors such as non-governmental organizations (NGOs) often disempower farmers. Moreover, due to the liberalization and globalization of many food value chains, producer organizations (POs) lost some of their legal privileges and market protections. This paper …
Poverty among riches
More people are listening to more recorded music than any other time in history. While record labels have largely rebounded from the lean ‘Napster years’ of the early 2000s, remuneration for artists remain low. This article moves beyond an investigation of label-artist contracts – largely blamed for low recording royalties – and considers the broader array of consequences brought by the institutional structure of the streaming economy. Three fact…
California margin temperatures modulate regional circulation and extreme summer precipitation in the desert Southwest
In August 2022, Death Valley, the driest place in North America, experienced record flooding from summertime rainfall associated with the North American monsoon (NAM). Given the socioeconomic cost of these type of events, there is a dire need to understand their drivers and future statistics. Existing theory predicts that increases in the intensity of precipitation is a robust response to anthropogenic warming. Paleoclimatic evidence suggests tha…
Cultivating the Symbolic Capital of Singularity
This article considers how local conditions of any one place both impact and are impacted by the geo-political and economic conditions of the wider world. Using the microcosm of the French winegrape vineyard, I explore local-global dynamics in the production and dissemination of symbolic capital. Facing market instability during the 19th century, French producers re-invented familiar symbols to distinguish their cultural wealth of place, creating…
Public Opinion on the Role of Government and Market in Latin America
This article examines public attitudes towards state ownership of industry and state measures to reduce income inequality. Relying upon the 2016/17 AmericasBarometer, our analysis finds that trust in institutions and education are the main determinants of support for different types of state intervention in the economy. Additionally, ideology and presidential approval matter when leaders frame their policies in ideological terms and a charismatic…
Desperately seeking happy chickens
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand why the quality markets are expanding in some areas of food production, while struggling in others. Across agricultural markets in advanced industrialized economies, there are movements toward quality production and consumption. The author argues that the quality turn in beer, coffee, wine and other transformed artisanal food production are fundamentally different from the quality movements in pr…
Examining the impact of uniform manipulations on perceptions of police officers among Canadian university students
It is important to understand how uniforms influence public perceptions of the police. The current study utilized a randomized design in which undergraduate students at a Canadian university were exposed to a series of photographs of officers wearing different uniform configurations (i.e., special duty vs. traditional uniform, dark vs. light shirt, dishevelled vs. tidy uniform, and uniform trousers with and without a stripe). Participants rated e…
From Myths to Markets
This article posits that institutionalized mythologies can create comparative production advantages. Myths shape collective identity, mobilize actors, and fundamentally reshape production dynamics. Myths are institutionalized in market rules, regulations and structures, leading to the reification of the myth. The myth functions as if it is true, not because it is true, but because it shapes the rules of production. Yet without the initial myth, s…
Yield response to climate, management, and genotype
Sustaining food security under climate conditions expected for the 21st century will require that existing crop production systems simultaneously increase both productivity and resiliency to warmer and more variable climate conditions. In this study, we analyzed observational rainfed maize ( Zea mays L.) yield data from major maize production areas of the US Corn Belt. These data included detailed information on crop management and genetics not t…

At the heart of political organization, we find weak and atomized individuals who aggregate their power to challenge concentrated power. Wine politics show us that within market economies we find the same political movements. Markets, like politics, consist of institutions that differentially embed, codify and distribute power. In the case of France, small, individually weak wine producers became powerful in the aggregate; unified French grape gr…
Separating heat stress from moisture stress
Several recent studies have indicated that high air temperatures are limiting maize ( Zea mays L.) yields in the US Corn Belt and project significant yield losses with expected increases in growing season temperatures. Further work has suggested that high air temperatures are indicative of high evaporative demand, and that decreases in maize yields which correlate to high temperatures and vapor pressure deficits (VPD) likely reflect underlying so…

Memoirs of the Life of Mrs Elizabeth Carter
Montagu Pennington (1762–1849) published this account of the life and work of the English poet and classicist Elizabeth Carter (1717–1806) in 1807. Carter first made her name in 1758 through her English translation of the work of the Greek Stoic philosopher Epictetus, for which she was acclaimed by Samuel Johnson as the 'best Greek scholar in England'. Carter also published numerous essays, articles, and translations and was an influential member…
The Glyptic of the Middle-Late Halaf Period at Domuztepe, Turkey (ca 5755-5450 BC)
The Middle-Late Halaf (ca 5755-5450 BC) stamp seals from Domuztepe in Southeastern Turkey are presented. Four major types of stamp seals are described : 1. Bead seals ; 2. Seals with suspension loops ; 3. Seal-pendants ; 4. Block Seals. The most common seals are those with suspension loops (Type II) made in geometric shapes with incised lines that cross and re-cross each other decorating the seal face. The design principles, such as centering the…
Gristhorpe Man
A log-coffin excavated in the early nineteenth century proved to be well enough preserved in the early twenty-first century for the full armoury of modern scientific investigation to give its occupants and contents new identity, new origins and a new date. In many ways the interpretation is much the same as before: a local big man buried looking out to sea. Modern analytical techniques can create a person more real, more human and more securely a…
Whose Bones are those? Preliminary Comparative Analysis of Fragmented Human and Animal Bones in the "Death Pit" at Domuztepe, a Late Neolithic Settlement in Southeastern Turkey

Resource Exploitation at Late Neolithic Domuztepe
Domuztepe, in southeastern Turkey, is one of the largest known Late Neolithic sites in the Near East. Ecofactual remains recovered at Domuztepe indicate that the site's inhabitants relied on a well-established mixed economy of domestic plants and animals to sustain the settlement's large population, which may have peaked at more than 1,500 people. Evidence of a long and continuous occupation of this site attests to a successful agropastoral econo…

Nonacoustic Contributions to the Perception of Fluent Speech
Phonetic ambiguities (e.g., a name/an aim) were excised from semantically neutral and disambiguating sentence contexts. The isolates were used to compare the effects of item familiarity, listener expectations, syntactic context, and semantic plausibility on segmentation and identification of the speech stream. In Experiment 1, 36 college students identified 81.6% nonambiguous controls, and 48.9% of the ambiguous isolates. In Experiment 2, 94 stud…
