Factors explaining adolescents’ digital skills in Europe
Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) play a pivotal role in the everyday lives of children and adolescents, shaping their educational experiences, leisure pursuits, and well-being. Thus, it is imperative for young individuals to have the capacity to employ digital skills adeptly, leading to tangible advantages for their personal growth and development. Yet, despite being born and brought up in a digital era and surrounded by digital …
European Youth and Digital Engagement
This study investigates the attitudes of young individuals aged 15-35 years toward digital communication, with a focus on digital skills, citizenship, and civic engagement. Utilising data from the European Social Survey (ESS) round 10 (2020), the research explores variations across over 30 European countries, examining responses to the ESS's rotating module on "Digital social contacts in work and family life." Key questions, such as exposure to m…
How precarious are European workers? An expert-system approach with evidence from the European Social Survey
Measuring the unmeasurable
Precarity has been established as a central theoretical issue in labour market research and numerous attempts have been made in the past to provide indicators that measure it. Precarity has also been present in political discourse and linked to specific new forms of employment (temporary, part-time, insecure, and atypical amongst others) and certain social groups often defined as vulnerable groups (youth, women, ethnic minorities). However, preca…
Stepping Stone or Trap? Contextualising Precarity as a Sector and Age Phenomenon in the Greek Labour Market
Precarity has been consolidated as a central concept in theoretical and political discussions around labour market(s) and labour relations and conditions. Moreover, it has strongly been linked with specific sociodemographic groups, prominently with youth. Both theory and empirical evidence have suggested that precarity functions as a necessary step towards integration in the labour market, as a kind of indispensable rite of passage to labour adul…
Workers' individual and dyadic coping with the Covid-19 health emergency
The aim of this study was to examine workers' psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic as a function of their individual coping, dyadic coping, and work-family conflict. We also tested the moderating role of gender and culture in these associations. To achieve this aim, we run HLM analyses on data from 1521 workers cohabiting with a partner, coming from six countries (Italy, Spain, Malta, Cyprus, Greece, and Russia) characterized by va…
Visualising key information and communication technologies (ICT) indicators for children and young individuals in Europe
DGmap is an online interactive tool that visualises indicators drawn from large-scale European and international databases reflecting the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) amongst children and young individuals in Europe. A large number of indicators are estimated and visualised on an interactive map revealing convergences and divergences amongst European countries. Apart from its main feature, that of facilitating users to …
On the Measurement of Positive Labor Market Mobility
The present article proposes a new labor market index, called the positive labor market mobility index, which focuses on quantifying the amount of “desired” labor market mobility present in the transitions of young individuals, providing a useful way of comparing countries on that matter. Well-established indices in the literature aiming at measuring mobility take into account all movements among states and/or the diagonal elements of the transit…
The Evolution of Early Job Insecurity in Europe
The present study proposes a meaningful multidimensional index of early job insecurity for European countries based on raw micro-data drawn from the European Union’s Labor Force Survey (EU-LFS), and captures its evolution over time, before and during the years of the post–2008 economic crisis. More specifically, a number of different indicators capturing various domains of early job insecurity are estimated, utilizing the data behind the EU-LFS s…
Improving Likert Scale Raw Scores Interpretability with K-means Clustering
In this article, by applying k-means clustering, cut-off points are obtained for the recoding of raw scale scores into a fixed number of groupings that preserve the original scoring. The method is demonstrated on a Likert scale measuring xenophobia that was used in a large-scale sample survey conducted in Northern Greece by the National Centre for Social Research. Applying split-half samples and fuzzy c-means clustering, the stability of the prop…
Quantifying gender distances in education, occupation and employment
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of gender in education, occupation and employment in Southern Europe and more specifically in Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain. The goal is to provide measures that can trace gender differences with respect to their educational and employment features in these countries, explore whether these differences converge over time and compare the patterns observed in each country given their s…
