Open Access•Nirmal Sengupta•ARTICLE•History and Sociology of South Asia•2010

  • Special issue 1 on Agrarian movements in Bihar: Comments on a review article

Nirmal Sengupta•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•1985

Henningham is taken to task for his misleading review article in The Journal of Peasant Studies (Vol.11, No. 4, July 1984) on the Special Issue on ‘Agrarian Movements in India: Studies on Twentieth Century Bihar’ (Vol.9, No.3, April 1982). It is suggested that Henningham seriously misrepresents the arguments in the Special Issue and uses his ‘review article’ as a vehicle for expounding the views presented in his own book, published in 1982.

The interaction between a highly capitalist land settlement and a social structure that was much too primitive, gave rise to agrarian conflicts from the very beginning of colonial rule. Tensions increased sharply in the twentieth century for a multiplicity of reasons. By around the 1930s they crystallised into an organised and widespread movement led by the 'Kisan Sabha'. The Kisan Sabha, during its short life, has undergone various experiences i…
