Maternal perceptions of pneumonia and pneumonia signs in Pakistani children
Insights from community-based research on child pneumonia in Pakistan
Although pneumonia is a major cause of death in Pakistan, little is known about community beliefs and practices surrounding the disease. In this study, 35 mothers and four self-trained allopathic practitioners were interviewed in Karachi squatter settlements and rural Punjab. The findings indicate that maternal ideas about chest anatomy and the cause of pneumonia (principally "coldness") are very different from biomedical concepts. Further, mothe…

Differential use of a clinic by Tarahumara Indians and Mestizos in the Mexican sierra madre
This report attempts to compare Tarahumara and mestizo use of a Jesuit mission clinic in the Sierra Madre from August 1 1981 through July 31 1982. The fact that far fewer Tarahumaras than mestizos attended the Creel clinic may simply reflect the population ratio. Almost 62% of the Tarahumara infants age 5 and under brought in to the clinic were male. However the admission figures seem to indicate more severe illness among the female infants. Most…
