  • Proportionality and Nonreductive Explanations in the Social Sciences

    Open Access•Wei Fang•ARTICLE•Philosophy of the Social Sciences•2026

Building upon the notion of proportionality, this article proposes a line of argument in favor of nonreductive explanations in the social sciences. I argue that many higher-level explanations in the social sciences, i.e., explanations over and above the individual-level, are legitimate explanations insofar as their explanantia are proportional to their given explananda of interest. These higher-level explanations are often favored over their indi…

  • Proportionality, Determinate Intervention Effects, and High-Level Causation

    Open Access•Wei Fang, Jiji Zhang•ARTICLE•Erkenntnis•2025

Stephen Yablo’s notion of proportionality, despite controversies surrounding it, has played a significant role in philosophical discussions of mental causation and of high-level causation more generally. In particular, it is invoked in James Woodward’s interventionist account of high-level causation and explanation, and is implicit in a novel approach to constructing variables for causal modeling in the machine learning literature, known as causa…
