Advancing a case for critical realism in forensic mental health scholarship and practice with youth convicted of sexual offences
Purpose Critical realism presents a philosophical and paradigm shift in forensic mental health scholarship and practice with youth convicted of sexual offences, which addresses current deficits in the risk management approach. Through universalism and essentialism, the dominant risk management approach classifies diverse youth by criminal behaviour and risk through predictive algorithms with a failure to account for history and oppression. Our analysisreveals that strain and labelling theories have not adequately attended to social justice, particularly systemic oppression, in their explanations of youth crime. We propose the use ofrestorative justice as an alternative framework that may address the limitations…
A critical examination of acculturation theories
Using an anti-oppressive and social justice lens, this paper critically examines the prominent theories of unidirectional, bidimensional and interactive acculturation. The analysis reveals that all three theoretical schools of thought have omitted to critically examine acculturation in relation to dominant-subordinate oppression, mutual transformation of immigrants and the receiving society, formulation and reformulation of identities, and issues…

This community-based research involved ethno-cultural members in sharing and reflecting upon their experiences with racial profiling in Calgary, Canada. Our results showed that regardless of their gender, age, ethnicity, income level, and education, many ethno-cultural members have been subjected to racially biased incidents and that those who took action to report racial profiling have been dissatisfied with the outcome of their complaints. Comm…
