This article looks back at a creative research project conducted in Geneva, Switzerland, which, by experimenting between art and science, sought to understand how citizen narratives can participate in the making of an urban plan. The approach presented here brought together geographers, architects, and novelists. Citizen narratives produced at writing workshops imagined the city of the future in ways that significantly contrasted with visions gat…

  • The empire of the narrative

    Open Access•L Matthey, Julie Ambal et al.•ARTICLE•Planning Theory•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 24

This article theorizes the "narrative turn" in urban planning studies, using Gérard Genette's work to differentiate first- and second-degree narratives. Genette defines the latter as paratexts that determine the public's reception of the former. The article assesses how second-degree narratives work with different perceptual regimes to construct the reception of the political vision of territory. To that end, it resorts to the recent work of post…

  • Failing Projects

    Open Access•Laurent Devisme, L Matthey•ARTICLE•Cahiers de la recherche…•2021

About the intentionsIn many ways, while becoming hegemonic in the workplace, the “city by project” gained a foothold that goes beyond the only spheres of design. While it was accompanied by clear enthusiasm, ad hoc and severe crises (e.g. the pandemic and lockdowns), as well as an horizon questioning certain characteristics of modernity — caring, slowing down, repairing — have fostered a context conducive to the questioning of projects’ promises.…

  • Anyone Who Inspects the World Around Him Is in Some Measure a Geographer”

    L Matthey•ARTICLE•GeoHumanities•2021•References: 17

In a 1947 paper, John K. Wright proposed the term “geosophy” to capture “the study of geographical knowledge from any or all points of view,” a discipline that would explore all “geographical ideas,” both “true and false.” This geosophy has led to a certain interest in parallel, imaginary or popular geographies. In the field of French-language geography, it will continue late in the day in a questioning of para-geographies produced by amateur or …

  • The Form of a City”

    Open Access•L Matthey, Nicola Cantoreggi•ARTICLE•Space and Culture•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 5

This article examines the potential contributions of Pasolinian anthropology to urban studies. Pasolinian anthropology aims to articulate a historical moment (i.e., the acceleration of the second industrial revolution in Italy between the mid-1960s and mid-1970s) with environmental and urban transformations. The authors sketch a portrait of Pasolini as a primitive theoretician who supported that which would become known as landscape urbanism. The…

  • We do have space in Lausanne. We have a large cemetery’

    L Matthey, Romain Felli et al.•ARTICLE•Social & Cultural Geography•2013•Cited by: 7•References: 21

In the context of the administration of spaces assigned by municipalities for the burial of the dead, this article provides a critical analysis of the techniques for the governance of political collectives of citizens implemented by public authorities. More broadly, this article shows how funerary practices (i.e. the social practices surrounding death-the rituals, the legislation, etc.) can be used to develop a critical reading of the social rela…

  • Les faiseurs de paysage. Ethnographie d'un projet urbain

    L Matthey•ARTICLE•L Information géographique•2013•References: 1

  • Urban geography in the era of globalization

Open Access•A Da Cunha, Christophe Mager et al.•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2012

  • De plantes dignes et d’invasions barbares

    Open Access•J J Fall, L Matthey•ARTICLE•VertigO•2011

    Open Access•Christophe Mager, L Matthey•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2010

    Open Access•A Cunha, L Matthey•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2008
