The basic method in the sociology of religion has been survey research. This has produced valuable results but has placed historical constraints on its future development. It has produced a narrow view of methodology and has limited our concern with historical-cultural realities. The expansion of the philosophy of science and the criticism of positivism lead us to believe our methodology will have to be reformulated. Several sociological theories…

Sociology, Biology, and the Analysis of Social Problems
There is some evidence that sociologists have neglected biological factors. A few of the historical intellectual reasons why this is the case are discussed. Biological sciences are complex and varied, but a “systems” explanation of social behavior suggests we may have to consider biological factors. Several broad areas of mutual concern for biologists and sociologists are discussed; however, the view is put forward that genetic and chemotherapy r…

Protestantism and American Sociology: Problems of Analysis
Although there are a number of different dimensions to religious phenomena, religious affiliation and membership often are used to establish the boundaries of the Protestant population. A study of 161 sociological research monographs revealed a certain amount of confusion in the operationalizing procedures which attempt to measure Protestantism. There are three problems revealed in this research; they are (1) residual lumping, (2) the range of tr…

Sociology and History: A New Look at Their Relatioaships
The working wife as a factor in the determination of family status has been universally ignored by students of stratification. In this plea for investigation, it is suggested that the employment or married women could affect the system of stratification in the following ways: (1) making pos-sible greater access to symbols of status; (2) implying that the husband has been unsuccessful in his own career; (3) identifying the wife with a particular o…
