Multidisciplinary study provides insight into archaeological context and environmental background of short-lived stronghold of Obłęże (Pomerania, Poland)
The early medieval settlement complex in Obłęże, situated along the Wieprza River, represents a unique archaeological site in Central Pomerania, distinguished by its well-preserved wooden structures and short period of occupation. This article presents the findings of a 2021 excavation, preceded by non-invasive geophysical surveys that accurately identified key excavation areas. The research uncovered remains of a wooden rampart, a wharf, and a s…
Wyniki badań nieinwazyjnych na zamkach krzyżackich w Starogrodzie, Unisławiu, Zamku Bierzgłowskim i Lipienku
W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki badań nieinwazyjnych, realizowanych w ramach projektu naukowego pt. „Castra Terrae Culmensis – na rubieży chrześcijańskiego świata”. Obejmowały one szerokopłaszczyznowe rozpoznanie za pomocą pomiarów magnetometrycznych i geofizycznych oraz naziemny skaning laserowy, które stanowiły podstawą do badań archeologicznych, prowadzonych w 2017 i 2018 roku
New historical data on the Teutonic Order crusades in Prussia
In 2016–2018 in Starogród, in historical Chełmno Land in northern‐central Poland, remains were discovered of a stronghold (convent house) of the Knights of the Teutonic Order that was founded in the 1230s. After a search lasting more than 100 years, remains were also discovered of the oldest and repeatedly translocated city of Chełmno, which was founded by the German Knights at the same time. Non‐invasive and archaeological studies were conducted…
Marea/Northern Hawwariya in northern Egypt
Marea/Northern Hawwariya is one of the largest and most important archaeological sites dating between the 3rd century BC and the 8th century AD located at Lake Mareotis in northern Egypt. Even though excavations have been carried out since the end of the 1970s, the settlement is still largely unexplored. To rectify this situation, non‐invasive research has been carried out on 21.5 ha of the site using a precise positioning system and magnetometer…
The Teutonic crusade in Prussia
Noninvasive and Archaeological Research at Late/Post Scythian Konsulivske Hillfort
Presented are the results of aerial photography and geophysical research methods at Konsulivske Late/Post Scythian hill-fort in the Dnipro River lower region. Described in detail is the location archaeological prospecting conducted at the hill-fort dated by the period from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. Given are an orthophoto-map and topographical plans of the hill-fort, maps of magnetic anomalies and the results of electrical resista…
Ghazali 2012
The medieval monastery at Ghazali in Sudan was excavated in part by the Sudan Antiquities Service in 1953 and 1954, and is one of the best preserved archaeological sites in the country. A new project of the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, University of Warsaw, and the National Corporation of Antiquities and Museums of Sudan revisited the ruins with a site presentation project coupled with excavation geared to bringing out a final publ…
New data from magnetic survey of Ptolemais
During non-invasive surveys carried out at the site Ptolemais since 2002 we have collected, processed and interpreted many different kinds of data: Quickbird-2 satellite imagery, oblique air photographs made with the use of KAP system in various years, seasons and lighting condition; field-walking survey, surveys with several geophysical methods (Misiewicz, 2005; Bogacki, 2008). Last two seasons the efficiency of magnetic prospection was tested w…
