The Winthir Collection
Documented skeletal collections that can be linked to individual life‐history information remain critical resources for bioarchaeological research, yet nonmodern identified series are still rare in Central Europe. We present the Winthir Collection, a late‐19th‐century skeletal assemblage from Munich, Germany, comprising 245 identified individuals recovered from an abandoned cemetery extension. Individual attribution was achieved through the integ…
Tracing early life histories from Roman times to the Medieval era
In humans, breastfeeding and weaning depend on the infant's needs and physiology but are also influenced by environmental and cultural factors. While infant feeding strategies vary across different regions and historical eras, the associated transition from breastmilk to solid foods is universally thought to be stressful. However, still little is known about infant feeding practices and possibly associated stress in former times. This also applie…
Prone burials and evidence of interpersonal violence
In early medieval times, the people of the Baiuvarii inhabited large parts of modern Bavaria (Germany). Among other evidence, about 10,000 graves dating from this time provide evidence of an exceptional level of settlement activity. These graves were arranged predominately in multiple parallel rows, so‐called Reihengräber, whereby the bodies were placed in stretched, supine positions. Burials that deviate from this custom are rarely found. For th…
An unusual discovery of human remains from the medieval church of Grevenmacher (Luxembourg)
The occurrence of burned human remains on a Christian burial ground is very rare in medieval Europe. Therefore, the discovery of a complex consisting of commingled burned and unburned human bones within the church of Grevenmacher (Luxembourg) is from special interest for anthropological as well as archaeological research. In the current paper we present methods for a comprehensive analysis for such an exceptional case connected with the question …
Reconstruction of Socioeconomic Status in the Medieval (14th-15th Century) Population of Grevenmacher (Luxembourg) Based on Growth, Development and Diet
Numerous historical sources describe many aspects of the estate-based society in medieval times; the detection of socioeconomic status within populations through skeletal remains is a topic of growing interest in anthropological studies. In medieval times, it was common for members of high social rank to be buried within or next to a church. This was certainly the case in Grevenmacher (Luxembourg), where remains of a church building and an adjace…
