  • The Invisibilised Labour of Diasporas as Co-sponsors in Refugee Sponsorship

    Open Access•Biftu Yousuf•ARTICLE•Refugee Survey Quarterly•2025•Cited by: 1

For almost 45 years, civil society groups have volunteered their time, energy, and finances to resettle more than 327,000 refugees through Canada’s Private Sponsorship of Refugees programme. Sponsorships are commonly arranged by local communities, faith-based organisations, or private citizens who have entered into agreements with the federal government. Open Access•Linda Peake, Mantha Katsikana et al.•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 21

For more than 40 years, groups of Canadian residents have raised funds and offered their time and energy to support over 325,000 refugee newcomers to Canada through the Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program. In 2020, targets for private refugee sponsorship in the Canadian context were double the number of government-assisted refugees. Private sponsorship is therefore an important focus of analysis in relation to refugee resettlement, representi…

  • The Resettlement Experiences of Oromo Women Who Entered Canada as Refugees

    Open Access•Biftu Yousuf, Nicole S Berry•ARTICLE•Refuge Canada s Journal on Refuge•2021•References: 35

A growing body of literature shows that gender-based experiences produce different circumstances for men and women who become refugees and thereafter. This article sought to contribute to this literature by investigating the challenges faced by Oromo women who have immigrated to Canada as refugees. Toward this end, we interviewed six Oromo women in Western Canada regarding what led them to leave Ethiopia, their experiences as refugees seeking asy…
