Patient Similarity in the Era of Precision Medicine
Prediction via Similarity
In recent years, the biomedical field has witnessed the emergence of novel tools and modelling techniques driven by the rise of the so-called Big Data. In this paper, we address the issue of predictability in biomedical Big Data models of cancer patients, with the aim of determining the extent to which computationally driven predictions can be implemented by medical doctors in their clinical practice. We show that for a specific class of approach…
Supportive care for older people with dementia
For many years, dementia care has been dominated by the standard medical approach, in which dementia is treated mainly with drugs, such as anti-anxiety, antidepressant and anti-psychotic medications. With the aim of seeking effective treatments for patients with dementia, over the last years, several contributions have criticised the pervasive use of drugs for the management of behavioural and physiological symptoms related to dementia, proposing…

Demented patients and the quandaries of identity
In the paper, after clarifying terms such as 'identity', 'self' and 'personhood', I propose an empirical account of identity based on the notion of "whole phenotype". This move allows one to claim the persistence of the individuals before and after their being affected by dementia. Furthermore, I show how this account permits us to address significant questions related to demented individuals' loss of the capacity of moral decisions

To begin a 5-years stint as editors-in-chief of what is probably the oldest journal dealing with philosophical, historical and societal aspects of the life sciences is both a big challenge and a big responsibility. We received a journal revitalized by the wonderful job made by Staffan Müller-Wille and his staff, as well as the assistance of Springer in bringing HPLS fully into the digital age, and for this we are very thankful. In this brief editor…

A large body of literature has documented negative mental health and behavioral outcomes for sexually abused children (e.g., PTSD, depression, ADHD). In response to these problems, researchers have developed individual, group, and family interventions for treating children who have experienced sexual abuse. The goal of this project was to conduct a comprehensive meta-analysis of the efficacy of psychological and behavioral treatments for sexually…
Theory and Experiment. The Case of Eötvös' Experiments
By analysing the historical case of the proportionality between inertia and gravitation, it is possible to reconstruct one of the most relevant moments in the history of physics, that is to say, the one linked with Eötvös' experiments. At the same time, this reconstruction offers the opportunity to carry out philosophical considerations about the relationship between theory and experiment and about the concept of incommensurability.
