  • The Meanings and Dividends of Man the Hunter

    Open Access•Vivek V Venkataraman, E H Hagen et al.•ARTICLE•Evolution and Human Behavior•2026

The phrase Man the Hunter is associated with disparate meanings across communities of scholars, journalists, and the public, which has led to unnecessary scientific disagreement and popular misunderstanding. In this paper, we ask: what does Man the Hunter mean? We distinguish three historical meanings of Man the Hunter. First, in the early-to-mid 20th century, popular writers propagated ideas of human evolution that focused on hunting, men, aggre…

  • Financial Instability in the Earned Income Tax Credit Program: Can Advanced Periodic Payments Ameliorate Systemic Stressors

    Open Access•Andrew J Greenlee, Karen Kramer et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Affairs Review•2020•References: 13

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) serves more than 26 million U.S. tax filers every year. The EITC is distributed annually at tax time; however, past research suggests that lump-sum disbursements leave households with a lack of funds to deal with financial emergencies throughout the year. Drawing upon the data from a pilot program conducted in 2014–2015 in Chicago, this study analyzes how advanced periodic payments help mitigate financial insta…

  • Can school-based distribution be used to maintain coverage of long-lasting insecticide treated bed nets: Evidence from a large scale programme in southern Tanzania

Open Access•Logan Stuck, Angelina Lutambi et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2017•References: 29

Many sub-Saharan African countries have achieved substantial gains in insecticide treated bednet coverage since 2005. The Tanzania National Malaria Control Programme identified school-based net distribution as one potential 'keep-up' strategy for the purpose of maintaining long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) coverage after a nationwide mass campaign in 2011. The School Net Programme (SNP) was implemented in three regions of southern Tanzania and…

  • Investigating mosquito net durability for malaria control in Tanzania - attrition, bioefficacy, chemistry, degradation and insecticide resistance (ABCDR): Study protocol

    Open Access•Lena M Lorenz, Hans J Overgaard et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

The data will be of importance to policy makers and vector control specialists both in Tanzania and the SSA region to inform best practice for the maintenance of high and cost-effective coverage and to maximise current health gains in malaria control

  • Overcoming Legal Liability Concerns for School-Based Physical Activity Promotion

Sara Zimmerman, Karen Kramer et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2013

Schools have been identified as a priority environment for physical activity promotion as a component of efforts to help prevent childhood obesity. A variety of school-based environmental and programmatic strategies have been proven effective in promoting physical activity both on-site and in the surrounding community. However, many schools are deterred by fears of increased risk of legal liability for personal injuries. We examine 3 school-based…

  • Growth rates and life histories in twenty‐two small‐scale societies

Open Access•Robert S Walker, Robert Walker et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2006

This study investigates variation in body growth (cross‐sectional height and weight velocity) among a sample of 22 small‐scale societies. Considerable variation in growth exists among hunter‐gatherers that overlaps heavily with growth trajectories present in groups focusing more on horticulture. Intergroup variation tends to track environmental conditions, with societies under more favorable conditions displaying faster growth and earlier puberty…

  • Arab Political Pacts: An Unlikely Scenario

    Open Access•Karen Kramer, Karen M Kramer•ARTICLE•Journal of democracy•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The formation of pacts between Arab regimes and liberal oppositional forces would be unlikely to move the region toward democratization. Liberal reformers do not have the political strength to compel the regimes toward real power sharing agreements. If pacts do become a political imperative, they will have to include the Islamists - the only Arab oppositional groups with the strength to extract real political compromise from the regimes. However,…

  • Maya Children: Helpers at the Farm

    Open Access•K L Kramer, Karen Kramer•BOOK•Maya Children•2005

Among the Maya of Xculoc, an isolated farming village in the lowland forests of the Yucatán peninsula, children contribute to household production in considerable ways. Thus this village, the subject of anthropologist Kramer's study, affords a remarkable opportunity for understanding the economics of childhood in a pre-modern agricultural setting
