The Study of Ethnicity in the Dutch Caribbean: Full Circle to Furnivall
This paper traces the origins of ethnic studies on the former Caribbean Dutch colonies to pioneering work done in the Dutch East Indies, notably J. S. Furnivall's concept of the plural society. The review of the rise, fall, and recent partial rediscovery of that analysis is followed by brief discussions of studies on ethnicity available in English regarding Suriname and the six Antillean islands.
