Open Access•Prema‐chandra Athukorala, Hal Hill et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2021

This paper examines the intellectual contributions of Professor W. M. (‘Max’) Corden to Economics. We focus on three main fields: trade theory and practice, especially his pioneering work on the theory of effective protection; open economy macroeconomics, including exchange rate policy, the international monetary system, Dutch Disease and economic crises; and Australian economic policy. We emphasise Max's motivation for working on these topics, a…

  • The export response to exchange rates and product fragmentation

Nobuaki Yamashita, Sisira Jayasuriya•ARTICLE•Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy•2013

This paper examines how changes in the Chinese real exchange rate affect China's exports in the context of global production networks. It highlights the misspecification inherent in conventional export models and the importance of distinguishing between the very different impacts of exchange rate changes relative to export destinations and those relative to sources of parts and components. Our empirical estimates cast further doubts on the effect…

  • The Asian Tsunami

    Sisira Jayasuriya, Peter Mccawley•BOOK•Asian Tsunami•2010

The 2004 Asian tsunami was the greatest natural disaster in recent times. Almost 230 000 people died. In response, governments in Asia and the broader international community announced large aid programs. The resulting assistance effort was one of the largest humanitarian programs ever organized in the developing world. This book discusses the lessons of the aid effort for disaster protection policy in developing countries

  • An Inward-Looking Economy in Transition

Hal Hill, Sisira Jayasuriya•BOOK•Inward-Looking Economy in…•1986

This account and analysis of economic development in Burma since 1962 sheds light on the economics of socialism in a very poor inward-looking economy especially after the mid-1970s. The study examines the evolution of development planning, recent macroeconomic developments, and the composition, pattern and direction of foreign trade, including the balance of payments and exernal debt. It also analyses the principal economic sectors, especially ag…

  • Mechanisation and cropping intensification

Sisira Jayasuriya, S K Jayasuriya et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•1986

Farm mechanisation in less developed countries was expected to increase output and cropping intensity by enabling greater ‘timeliness’ of crucial farm operations. However, empirical evidence shows no such effects. It is demonstrated that in low‐wage economies only a small number of machines can be economically viable in a given area; this number is generally inadequate to improve timeliness of operations

  • Farmers’ long‐term investment decisions

Sisira Jayasuriya, Colin Barlow et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•1981

Planting and replanting of perennial crops confronts small farmers with a long‐term investment decision. In this study, we analyse the behaviour of rubber smallholders in Sri Lanka when faced with a replacement decision. An intertemporal profit maximizing model (maximizing discounted stream of expected future net revenues) predicts behaviour of larger, hired labour using farmers quite well. The model can also be extended successfully to smaller, …
