Humans are not cooperative breeders but practice biocultural reproduction
CONTEXT: Alloparental care and feeding of young is often called "cooperative breeding" and humans are increasingly described as being a cooperative breeding species. OBJECTIVE: To critically evaluate whether the human offspring care system is best grouped with that of other cooperative breeders. METHODS: (1) Review of the human system of offspring care in the light of definitions of cooperative, communal and social breeding; (2) re-analysis of hu…
Microbial exposures in infancy predict levels of the immunoregulatory cytokine interleukin‐4 in filipino young adults
OBJECTIVES: Infancy represents a window of development during which long-term immunological functioning can be influenced. In this study, we evaluate proxies of microbial exposures in infancy as predictors of interleukin-4 (IL-4) in young adulthood. IL-4 is an immunoregulatory cytokine that plays a role in the pathogenesis of atopic and allergic diseases. METHODS: Data were obtained from 1,403 participants in the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutr…

Positive antibody response to vaccination in adolescence predicts lower C‐reactive protein concentration in young adulthood in the philippines
This study provides evidence for a prospective, within-individual link between more effective antibody-mediated immune defenses and lower levels of inflammation. In the context of prior research in this population, these results suggest that early environments are important determinants of multiple aspects of an individual's immuno-phenotype
