Resistances to critical language awareness
Drawing from students’ reflections, classroom observations, and individual interviews, this study examines the case of a Spanish for Heritage speakers class comprised of Heritage Speakers (HS) and international Latin American students in a predominantly white institution (PWI). Focusing on the development of Critical Language Awareness (CLA) , this study shows the various forms of resistance toward these pedagogies (e.g. withdrawal, class divisio…
Initiatives to promote the intergenerational transmission of basque
In the European context, some revitalisation movements have seen the widespread adoption of minority language schooling among parents who do not speak the minority language. This research discusses the role of the 'school for fathers and mothers' or talleres (workshops) to encourage a more Basque-focused household among parents who have low proficiency in Basque. The talleres translate knowledge from the field of language socialisation into messa…
On Interdisciplinary Presentism in Hispanic Studies
In this article, “presentism”—bringing current events into the classroom to discuss historically rooted structural inequalities (Spratt and Draxler 2019)— is examined as a pedagogical tool in the context of a service-learning class in which students participate with different Latinx partnerships. During COVID-19, this service-learning class has been restructured as a distance learning experience where students meet synchronously with different sc…
Comparing Spanish certification exams for bilingual teachers
This article compares Spanish proficiency assessments across three states (Texas, Arizona, and California) in relation to four overarching themes: (a) verification methods of proficiency; (b) test-task authenticity; (c) impact of pedagogical content knowledge in test performance; and (d) conceptions of language ‘correctness’ on the scoring rubrics. The research findings indicate incongruencies in the way the three states define the proficiency of…
Bringing parents together
In this article, I analyse the programme and pedagogy of Karmelo Ikastola, a Basque immersion school that promotes parental involvement and language use within the family. The Karmelo case is noteworthy due to its success at effectively promoting the use of Basque among students inside and outside the school along with its promotion of curricular separation between L1 native speakers and L2 learners of Basque. With support from the EBETE language…
Towards a parental muda for new Basque speakers
The concept of muda refers to how specific biographical moments can precipitate changes in the speaker's linguistic repertoire (Pujolar & Gonzàlez, 2012). In recent years, more inclusive or participatory approaches to intergenerational transmission in language revitalization contexts have been encouraging all parents, including those with low proficiency in the minority language, to participate in their child's language acquisition. This article …
Aging in a Second Language
Vuelta en el español ecuatoriano y así en el español fronterizo mexicano
This study centers on two Spanish language discourse markers: así in the Spanish-English contact area along the U.S.-Mexico border and vuelta , a discourse marker used in Andean Spanish which is in contact with Ecuadorian Quichua. Applying Relevance Theory, we observe how these markers convey emergent pragmatic and intersubjective functions. Vuelta is able to function as an enumerator indexing iterativity and as a quotative framing indirect speec…
