  • Exploring racial and ethnic diversity trajectories and diabetes prevalence in the United States

    Open Access•Jiue‐an Yang, Calvin P Tribby et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2026

This study investigates whether long-term changes in neighborhood racial and ethnic diversity are associated with adult diabetes prevalence across the contiguous United States. We calculated diversity indexes for US census tracts (n = 72,033) using decennial census data from 1990 to 2020. Five diversity trajectory clusters were identified using K-means clustering. Diabetes prevalence in 2019 was obtained from the CDC’s PLACES dataset. Linear mixe…

  • Measuring access to culturally appropriate food and associations with diabetes among Asian Americans and Native Hawaiians or Pacific Islanders

Open Access•Rujia Xie, Yanjia Cao et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2025

Objective: The Food Access Research Atlas (FARA) is a common measure of food access developed by the US Department of Agriculture. However, its sole focus on supermarkets lacks specificity for culturally appropriate food. This ecological study assesses the relationship of FARA and our novel Yelp-based Ethnic Store Measure with diabetes rates among Asian Americans and Native Hawaiians or Pacific Islanders (AAPI). Design: This study leveraged crowd…

  • Changes in activity spaces, life spaces, and exposures to physical activity-promoting environments among women with overweight or obesity

    Open Access•Nana Luo, Jiue‐an Yang et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2025•Cited by: 1

Understanding factors associated with successful adherence and maintenance of weight loss interventions is important to potentially increase efficacy. Activity spaces and environmental exposures are two understudied factors that may be associated with intervention adherence and outcomes. Women with overweight or obesity (n = 498) from two weight loss intervention studies, Reach for Health and Metabolic, Exercise, and Nutrition at University of Ca…

  • Association between cardiovascular health and perceived quality of life in ethnically diverse adults: Insights from the Community of Mine study using the American Heart Association’s Life’s Simple 7

    Open Access•Erica J Ambeba, Dorothy D Sears et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2024

Ideal or intermediate CVH health factors and health behaviors were associated with higher PQoL. Sex and ethnicity differences suggest that perceived quality of life is associated with BMI for women and non-Hispanics

  • Movement- and Posture-based Measures of Sedentary Patterns and Associations with Metabolic Syndrome in Hispanic/Latino and non-Hispanic Adults

    Open Access•Marta M Jankowska, Calvin P Tribby et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Racial and Ethnic…•2024•References: 56

Background Sedentary behavior has been identified as a significant risk factor for Metabolic Syndrome (MetS). However, it is unclear if the sedentary pattern measurement approach (posture vs. movement) impacts observed associations or if associations differ for Hispanic/Latino communities, who have higher risk of MetS. Methods Participants from the Community of Mine (CoM) study (N = 602) wore hip-based accelerometers for 14 days and completed Met…

  • Covid-19 Cases and the Built Environment: Initial Evidence from New York City

    Calvin P Tribby, Chris Hartmann•ARTICLE•The Professional Geographer•2021

Social distancing (e.g., maintaining two-meter distance between people, restricting group gatherings) is recommended to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Social distancing guidelines might not broadly consider the varying built environment contexts in which people live, however. Controlling for key covariates, we examined the association of several built environment characteristics with COVID-19 cases in New York City. This cross-sectiona…

  • Homeschool Student Physical Activity Compared to Public/Private School Students: The 2017 US National Household Travel Survey

    Open Access•Calvin P Tribby, David Berrigan•ARTICLE•Journal of School Health•2021

BACKGROUND: School is an important place for physical activity (PA); however, little is known about how homeschool students' PA levels compare with public and private school students. This study estimated the national prevalence of PA levels of homeschool students compared to public and private school students. METHODS: We used the 2017 National Household Travel Survey for school-aged participants (N = 31,486) to compare weekly PA (not active, li…

  • Walking and Sun Protective Behaviors: Cross-Sectional Associations of Beneficial Health Factors

    Open Access•Calvin P Tribby, Frank M Perna et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Sun protective behaviors and physical activity have the potential to reduce cancer risk. Walking is the most common type of physical activity in the United States, but it is unclear whether sun protective behaviors differ by categories of walking, such as leisure versus transportation walking. We examined whether sun protective behaviors varied by category or duration of walking in the 2015 National Health Interview Survey (N = 26,632), age ≥ 18 …

  • Analyzing walking route choice through built environments using random forests and discrete choice techniques

    Open Access•Calvin P Tribby, Hubert J Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2017

Walking is a form of active transportation with numerous benefits, including better health outcomes, lower environmental impacts and stronger communities. Understanding built environmental associations with walking behavior is a key step towards identifying design features that support walking. Human mobility data available through GPS receivers and cell phones, combined with high resolution walkability data, provide a rich source of georeference…

  • Public transit generates new physical activity: Evidence from individual GPS and accelerometer data before and after light rail construction in a neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA

    Open Access•Hubert J Miller, Calvin P Tribby et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 1

  • Transit Use, Physical Activity, and Body Mass Index Changes: Objective Measures Associated With Complete Street Light-Rail Construction

B Bradford Brown, Carol M Werner et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 40

Objectives. We assessed effects on physical activity (PA) and weight among participants in a complete street intervention that extended a light-rail line in Salt Lake City, Utah. Methods. Participants in the Moving Across Places Study resided within 2 kilometers of the new line. They wore accelerometers and global positioning system (GPS) loggers for 1 week before and after rail construction. Regression analyses compared change scores of particip…
