  • It Takes a Village to Raise a Scientist: Social Network Predictors of Satisfaction for Academic Trainees in Canada

Open Access•Holly J Kalyn Bogard, Calvin Lloyd et al.•ARTICLE•Quantitative Science Studies•2026

Graduate students and postdoctoral researchers (trainees) rely on social resources within their academic networks to progress through their careers. How these resources are distributed and foster research productivity and trainee satisfaction, remains unclear. We surveyed 93 trainees from three Canadian universities using personal social network analysis to investigate how satisfaction measures were associated with reported technical and emotiona…

  • From merton to market: Normative tensions in Canadian science

    Open Access•Holly J Kalyn Bogard, L Barrett•ARTICLE•Quantitative Science Studies•2026

Traditional “Mertonian” social norms are thought to safeguard fairness and impartiality in academic science. However, as university-based research increasingly responds to market demands and stakeholder accountability, these ideals may be blending with, or supplanted by, industrial norms of science, reflecting a shift toward a “post-academic” normative structure. Despite this potential transformation, empirical studies of contemporary scientists’…

  • Social induction and the developmental trajectory of participation in intergroup conflict by vervet monkeys

    Open Access•Madison Clarke, Tyler R Bonnell et al.•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Human Sciences•2025•References: 2

We assess the proposition that intergroup conflict (IGC) in non-human primates offers a useful comparison for studies of human IGC and its links to parochial altruism and prosociality. That is, for non-linguistic animals, social network integration and maternal influence promote juvenile engagement in IGC and can serve as the initial grounding for sociocultural processes that drive human cooperation. Using longitudinal data from three cohorts of …

  • What role do olfactory cues play in chacma baboon mating

    Open Access•Parry M R Clarke, L Barrett et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2009

The probability of ovulation in a number of primate species is associated with both visual and auditory cues. We use 18‐month behavioral data from two chacma baboon troops to provide the first systematic assessment of the possibility that olfactory cues are also involved. Using variance in the rate of olfactory inspection by males as a proxy for changes in the intensity of female vaginal odor, we found that rates of inspection were broadly correl…
