The Political Economy of Lauchlin Currie's Land Tax Policy in Wartime China
This article examines Lauchlin Currie's land tax policy suggestion during wartime China and its political economy. Our study, based on unpublished archival materials, aims to clarify the reasons for and outcomes of Currie's first visit to China in 1942. It is argued that Currie, acting as a sincere adviser, based his policy recommendation on extensive surveys of the political and economic conditions of wartime China. In his efforts to persuade th…

Two Types of Travelers in the History of the Transmission of Western Economic Knowledge in Late Qing and Early Republican China
The history of the transmission of Western knowledge to China-Western Learning or Xixue-usually revolves around travelers. What is unmentioned, however, is that the identity of the two types of Chinese travelers of economic knowledge evolved throughout the Western Learning Movement. One-way travelers introduced political economy as a means to improve institutions and statecraft. First-generation Chinese students overseas continued to promote econ…
Representation and Idealization
This article explores how diagrams are performed in actual scientific practice by examining two studies of the structure of periodic markets in rural China before and during the World War II. These are Ching-Kun Yang’s pioneering study of systematic field observations of Chinese periodic markets in the 1930s, and the US anthropologist William G. Skinner’s model, which accounts for the social and economic structure of rural China. In both cases, t…

Inference to the Best Model of the Consumption Function
Empirical tests in economics may not decisively confirm or disconfirm a theory. Three cases of studies of consumption function from the 1930s to the early 1970s discussed in this article show that we can interpret economists’ practices as inferences to derive the best model from the available evidence as well as from the competition among available models
Models and Credibility
This article argues that the credibility of both theoretical and empirical models in economics is best understood through their connection with the empirical aspects of the real world. The discussion herein demonstrates that the similarity between the model and the real world is not enough to justify a theoretical model’s explanatory power. The best way to secure the model’s credibility is to prove the existence of representation theorems
Ta-Chung Liu's Exploratory Econometrics
This essay studies the contribution of Ta-Chung Liu to econometrics by focusing on the models and methods of Liu's econometric practices from the 1950s to the 1970s. We document his development of an exploratory econometric approach, a development he effected by experimenting with tools and elements in the model-building process and which led him finally to accept the recursive methodology represented by Herman Wold. We also discuss Liu's theoret…
