Objective. We examined the use of complementary and alternative medical (CAM) therapies among Chinese and Vietnamese Americans who had limited proficiency with the English language and explore the association between patient–clinician discussions about CAM therapy use and patient assessments of quality of care. Methods. We surveyed Chinese and Vietnamese Americans who visited 11 community health centers in 8 major cities throughout the United Sta…

  • Pathways to Labor Force Exit

    Jan E Mutchler, J A Burr et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•1997•Citada por: 17•Referencias: 6

The purpose of this study is to examine alternative pathways to labor force exit among older men. Based on the life course perspective, we distinguish between crisp exits from the labor force, which are characterized as being unidirectional, and blurred transition patterns, which include repeated exists, entrances, and unemployment spells. Using longitudinal data from the 1984 Survey of Income and Program Participation, we find that one-quarter o…

George R Seage, Constantine Gatsonis et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1997•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 9

OBJECTIVES: This study developed a new acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) severity system by including diagnostic, physiological, functional, and sociodemographic factors predictive of survival. METHODS: Three-hundred five persons with AIDS in Boston were interviewed; their medical records were reviewed and vital status ascertained. RESULTS: Overall median (+/- SD) survival for the cohort from the first interview until death was 560 +/- 14…

  • Labor Force Transitions among Older African American and White Men

    J A Burr, Michael P Massagli et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•1996•Citada por: 1

Using a life-course/opportunity-cost framework, we study racial differences in labor force behavior among African American and white men aged 55 to 69. A multifaceted measure of labor force behavior is examined within a longitudinal framework. We perform the analyses with a merged sample of the 1984 and 1985 Survey of Income and Program Participation, and we find that the most stable status is not working, followed by full-time, part-time, and un…

  • Changes in insurance status and access to care for persons with Aids in the Boston Health Study

Joel S Weissman, Harvey J Makadon et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1994•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 8

The purpose of this study was to measure unmet needs and changes in insurance status for persons with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Thirty-six percent of the study's Boston-area respondents (n = 305) had a change in insurance coverage between AIDS diagnosis and interview. Medicaid coverage increased from 14% to 41%. Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia prophylaxis was nearly universal. Only 5% did not receive zidovudine, and intravenous dr…

OBJECTIVES. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of personal and job characteristics on the time to employment loss after diagnosis of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and to examine how job loss affects patients' income. • Measuring Public Priorities for Insurable Health Care

Floyd Jackson Fowler, Donald M Berwick et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1994

The goal of this research was to develop and evaluate a way to measure the value people place on various medical services in their decisions about what health insurance should cover. A vignette approach to measuring consumer values was developed. People were asked to assign priority and desire to have insurance cover 64 different services. A national probability sample of 206 adults was interviewed by telephone. Their ratings were compared with t…

  • Health-Related Quality of Life in Persons with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome

Paul D Cleary, Floyd Jackson Fowler et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1993

Assessing health-related quality of life in persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is extremely important, but most available scales are too long, contain items that are not relevant for such persons, or do not assess important signs and symptoms of HIV infection. This study presents a new set of scales for assessing the symptoms and functioning of persons infected with HIV and reports data on their reliability and validity coll…

  • The Use of Female Spouse Proxies in Common Symptom Reporting

Brian Clarridge, Brian R Clarridge et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1989

To determine the quality of proxy health reports by telephone the 1984 Wisconsin Health Status Survey employed a repeated-measure design in an interview covering 22 recently occurring health and psychologic complaints. Comparisons on individuals in households containing two or more adults revealed a relatively weak correspondence between the respondent and proxy reports. While a previous analysis of these data found that certain characteristics t…

  • Estimating adult mortality with maternal orphanhood data

    Alberto Palloni, Michael P Massagli et al.•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1984•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 4

Techniques based on proportions of maternal orphans have been widely used to estimate women's mortality at adult ages. Such techniques are based on relatively few but significantly strong assumptions. As real conditions may depart to different degrees from the latter, the results obtained from the application of the technique can be biased. In this paper we assess the magnitude and direction of the bias introduced when: (a) mortality has changed …

  • Some models of agreement and disagreement in repeated measurements of occupation

    Open Access•R M Hauser, Michael P Massagli•ARTICLE•Demography•1983•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 6

Measures used by the U.S. Bureau of the Census to assay misclassification and correct marginal distributions—the net difference rate and the index of inconsistency—may produce misleading results and do not fully use information about inconsistency in repeated measurements. We show how multiplicative models of classifications of repeated measurements can be used to locate sources of inconsistency in marginal classifications, sources of discrepanci…

  • Response Variability in Self-and Proxy Reports of Paternal and Filial Socioeconomic Characteristics

    Michael P Massagli, R M Hauser•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1983•Citada por: 1

In a 1973 Australian survey, Broom et al. located two distinct subsamples of men in which fathers and sons reported their own status characteristics and those of their sons and fathers, respectively. Inconsistencies between these two subsamples led Broom et al. to infer that "respondents report (perhaps unconsciously) their socioeconomic careers and the careers of their kin in such ways as either to maximize differences between themselves and the…

Carlton A Hornung, Michael P Massagli et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•1979•Citada por: 7

The relationship between personal characteristics of office-based primary-care physicians, characteristics of their routine practice of medicine, and two dimensions of affective orientation is examined. One dimension of affective orientation is a tendency to define a patient's behavior as hypochondria; the other is a tendency to define the patient's behavior as constituting a challenge to clinical competence and professional integrity. The result…
