  • The Impact of Pain Coping Strategies on Chronic Pain Among Native Americans

    Open Access•Taylor V Brown, C Sturycz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Racial and Ethnic…•2026

  • Relationships among discrimination, cognitive-affective pain amplifiers, and identification with Native American culture

    Open Access•Brandon W Jones, Hayden M Ventresca et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

These findings suggest that the relationship between discrimination and pain catastrophizing is stronger for NAs who identify more strongly with NA culture, an effect that is likely due to these individuals having greater overall exposure to discrimination. Alternatively, the NAAS may not capture the full range of cultural processes that buffer against negative health outcomes for NAs. Future research should examine other facets of cultural resil…

  • A qualitative analysis of pain meaning

    Meredith D Ehrhardt, Kristen N Gray et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•2020•References: 2

The most widely accepted definition of pain considers it a sensory and emotional experience associated with potential or actual physical harm. However, research tends to generalize findings from predominantly European American samples thereby assuming universality across cultures. Because of the high prevalence of pain within the AI group, it is important to consider whether their conceptualization of pain is similar to the universal definition. …

  • Interoception and Mental Health

Open Access•Sahib S Khalsa, Ralph Adolphs et al.•ARTICLE•Biological Psychiatry: Cognitive…•2018

Interoception refers to the process by which the nervous system senses, interprets, and integrates signals originating from within the body, providing a moment-by-moment mapping of the body's internal landscape across conscious and unconscious levels. Interoceptive signaling has been considered a component process of reflexes, urges, feelings, drives, adaptive responses, and cognitive and emotional experiences, highlighting its contributions to t…

  • Emotional Modulation of Pain and Spinal Nociception in Sexual Assault Survivors

Natalie Hellman, Bethany L Kuhn et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2018

OBJECTIVE: Sexual assault (SA) is associated with an increased risk for chronic pain and affective distress. Given that emotional processes modulate pain (e.g., negative emotions enhance pain, positive emotions inhibit pain), increased pain risk in SA survivors could stem from a disruption of emotional modulation processes. METHODS: A well-validated affective picture-viewing paradigm was used to study emotional modulation of pain in 33 healthy, p…

  • Pilot study

    Open Access•Katherine E Miller, Joanne L Davis et al.•ARTICLE•Dreaming•2018

  • Randomized controlled trial to dismantle exposure, relaxation, and rescripting therapy (ERRT) for trauma-related nightmares

Kristi E Pruiksma, Christopher C Cranston et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2016

Findings indicate that ERRT with and without nightmare exposure and rescripting can significantly alleviate nightmares and related distress. The addition of nightmare exposure and rescription did not contribute incrementally to outcomes in this sample. It is possible that the dose of exposure was not sufficient to result in group differences or that the treatment components included in both conditions (i.e., psychoeducation about trauma, nightmar…

  • A comparison of lifelong and posttrauma nightmares in a civilian trauma sample

    Joanne L Davis, Kristi E Pruiksma et al.•ARTICLE•Dreaming•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Nightmares and sleep disturbances are thought to play a key role in the development of posttrauma problems. Research efforts have increased in an attempt to understand this association. The present study examined differences in nightmare characteristics, related psychopathology, treatment outcome, and trauma history among trauma-exposed individuals whose nightmares began before a traumatic event and those whose nightmares began after a traumatic …

  • Longitudinal Effects of Hope on Depression and Anxiety

    Open Access•Randolph C Arnau, David H Rosen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2007

This study tested the prospective effects of hope on depression and anxiety using a longitudinal design. A sample of 522 college students completed self‐report measures of hope, depression, and anxiety at three time points, with 1‐month delays between administrations. Structural equation modeling was employed to test two cross‐lagged panel models of the reciprocal effects of the Agency and Pathways components of hope on depression and anxiety. Re…

  • Characteristics of chronic nightmares in a trauma-exposed treatment-seeking sample

Joanne L Davis, Patricia Byrd et al.•ARTICLE•Dreaming•2007•Cited by: 4•References: 3

Chronic nightmares pose a significant problem for many individuals affected by trauma. The present study attempts to extend current knowledge on the nature, characteristics, and associated sequelae of chronic nightmares. Data were collected from 94 trauma-exposed, treatment-seeking participants (74

  • Pain and Emotion

    Mary W Meagher, Randolph C Arnau et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2001

OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: Two experiments examined the impact of viewing unpleasant, pleasant, and neutral photographic slides on cold-pain perception in healthy men and women. In each experiment, participants viewed one of three slide shows (experiment 1 = fear, disgust, or neutral; experiment 2 = erotic, nurturant, or neutral) immediately before a cold-pressor task. Skin conductance and heart rate were recorded during the slide shows, whereas visu…
