When Less Is More
In classroom interactions over video conferencing platforms, teachers and students gesture, but their bodies are neither physically copresent nor fully visible to each other. Do instructor gestures help learning in this context? We showed participants videos of professors lecturing spontaneously with unscripted co‐speech gestures. In some conditions, we edited this recording to mimic the Zoom lecture experience, cropping the video or removing the…
Languaging, participatory technology, and becoming
The enactive continuity between life, language and symbol
Paradoxical practices of being with others
This paper presents findings from an experiment/workshop, which was motivated by the ever-increasing need in today’s fractured and complex world to foster engagements between people of diverse backgrounds, positions, and identities. The workshop taught and employed the PRISMA method, which provides a way for researcher-participants to study the experiential dynamics of participatory sense-making in social interactions. PRISMA can be seen as an an…
Intentions in interactions
The search for origins of human linguistic behavior is a consuming project in many fields. Philosophers drawing on studies of animal behavior are working to revise some of the standard cognitive requirements in hopes of linking the origins of human language to non-human animal communication. This work depends on updates to Grice’s theory of communicative intention and Millikan’s teleosemantics. Yet the classic idea of speaker meaning on which the…
Linguistic Bodies
A novel theoretical framework for an embodied, non-representational approach to language that extends and deepens enactive theory, bridging the gap between sensorimotor skills and language. Linguistic Bodies offers a fully embodied and fully social treatment of human language without positing mental representations. The authors present the first coherent, overarching theory that connects dynamical explanations of action and perception with langua…
Doubleness in Experience
A new concept of cognition also implies a novel approach to the study of metaphor. This insight is the starting point of this article presenting two innovations to comprehending and analyzing metaphor, one theoretical and one in terms of methodology. On a theoretical level we argue for a new orientation to metaphor and metaphoricity based on enactive cognition and distributed language and cognition. In recent years enactive and distributed cognit…
From participatory sense-making to language
The enactive approach to cognition distinctively emphasizes autonomy, adaptivity, agency, meaning, experience, and interaction. Taken together, these principles can provide the new sciences of language with a comprehensive philosophical framework: languaging as adaptive social sense-making. This is a refinement and advancement on Maturana's idea of languaging as a manner of living. Overcoming limitations in Maturana's initial formulation of langu…

Habits of Transformation
This essay argues that according to feminist existential phenomenology, feminist pragmatism, and feminist genealogy, our embodied condition is an important starting place for ethical living due to the inevitable role that habits play in our conduct. In bodies, the phenomenon of habit uniquely holds together the ambiguities of freedom and determinism, transcendence and immanence, and stability and plasticity. Seeing habit formation as a matter of …
