In West Africa, certain objects can act in the world and interact with people as subjects. Labeled "fetishes" by Europeans, these material things have generated centuries of debates on the nature of their agency. In this article, I rely on participant fieldwork as a student in a group of initiated donso hunters in Burkina Faso, which involved using my own fetishes as operator and other people's as client. Starting from this ethnography, I suggest…

  • Sonic ethnography

    Open Access•Faye Ginsburg, Andrew Irving et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Sonic Ethnography•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 51

Sonic ethnography explores the role of sound-making and listening practices in the formation of local identities in the southern Italian region of Basilicata. The book uses a combination of text, photography and sound recording to investigate soundful cultural performances such as tree rituals, carnivals, pilgrimages, events promoting cultural heritage and more informal musical performances. Its approach demonstrates how in the acoustic domain tr…

  • The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper’ (WB Yeats)

    Open Access•A Young, Lorenzo Ferrarini et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Humanities•2019•References: 17

This article concerns deaf children and young people living in South Africa who are South African Sign Language users and who participated in an interdisciplinary research project using the medium of teaching film and photography with the goal of enhancing resilience. Specifically, this paper explores three questions that emerged from the deaf young people's experience and involvement with the project: (i) What is disclosed about deaf young peopl…

  • The Shirts of the Donso Hunters

    Open Access•Lorenzo Ferrarini•ARTICLE•African Studies Review•2019•References: 47

This article looks at the characteristic shirts of thedonso, or initiated Mande hunters. Often described in the literature as visual displays of the wearer's power, in the context of contemporary Burkina Faso these shirts are instead an example of how hunters deal with representations of power through an aesthetics of concealment (Ferme 2001). An excess of display is conversely connected with the politics of state-recognized hunters' associations…

  • MacD ougall, D avid ( b . 1939) and J udith ( b . 1938)

    Open Access•Lorenzo Ferrarini•OTHER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2018

David and Judith MacDougall have directed numerous important ethnographic films and David is considered one of the most prominent theorists in visual anthropology. Their filmic and written works are characterized by a dialectic between observation and participation and the development of audiovisual ways of knowing that can bring anthropology beyond text

  • Filmmaking, Collaborative

    Open Access•Lorenzo Ferrarini•OTHER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2018

In visual anthropology, collaborative filmmaking designates a variety of practices that involve a widely variable degree of teamwork between filmmaker and subjects, who can share the authorship of the film in various proportions. Collaborative methodologies have been motivated by ethical, political, epistemological, and even technical reasons to produce films as different as ethnofictions or observational and reflexive documentaries. Further, the…

  • Embodied Representation

    Lorenzo Ferrarini•ARTICLE•Anthrovision•2017

This article represents a reflection on the application of the perspective provided by sensory ethnography to audiovisual media productions. It starts from the debate on anthropology of the senses and sensory ethnography to underline the importance of the rendition of a recording body in a film or sound recording. The text then reviews examples from the work of Jean Rouch and Steven Feld, underlining how they developed specific recording technolo…

  • Enactive Filmmaking

    Open Access•Lorenzo Ferrarini•ARTICLE•Visual Anthropology Review•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 15

In this article, I revisit the concept of ethnographic filmmaking in the first person, reviewing first the different interpretations of the first person in documentary filmmaking and then proposing an approach that stresses interaction and intersubjectivity. I term this approach enactive filmmaking, drawing inspiration from the films of Jean Rouch and the thought of cognitive scientist Francisco Varela. I discuss enactive filmmaking's interconnec…

  • The dankun network

    Lorenzo Ferrarini•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary African…•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 31

In this text I look at processes of transformation involving an initiatory society of hunters known in parts of West Africa as donsoya. In countries like Mali, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso restrictive environmental policies drew donso hunters into state-recognised associations, a phenomenon that has massively transformed donsoya in the past 25 years. Ecological change implied the disappearance of the big animals that gave master hunters their pre…
