  • The psychology of thinking before the cognitive revolution

    Michel Ter Hark•ARTICLE•History of Psychology•2010•References: 3

Otto Selz has been hailed as one of the most important precursors of the cognitive revolution, yet surprisingly few studies of his work exist. He is often mentioned in the context of the Würzburg School of the psychology of thinking and sometimes in the context of Gestalt psychology. In this paper, it is argued that Selz's emphasis on the role of problems and schemas in the direction of thought processes and creativity sets him apart from the pro…

  • Wittgenstein, Pretend Play and the Transferred Use of Language

    Open Access•Michel Ter Hark•ARTICLE•Journal for the Theory of Social…•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This essay sketches the potential implications of Wittgensteinian thought for conceptualizations of socalled fictive mental states, e.g. mental calculating, imagination, pretend play, as they are currently discussed in developmental psychology and philosophy of mind. In developmental psychology the young child's pretend play and make-belief are seen as a manifestation of the command of an underlying individualistic "theory of mind". When saying "…

  • The psychology of thinking, animal psychology, and the young Karl Popper

    Open Access•Michel Ter Hark•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of the…•2004•Cited by: 2•References: 6

In the 1920s, Karl Popper wrote two large manuscripts on psychology that he never published. In his autobiography, Unended Quest, he attempts to reduce the importance of his work in psychology as much as possible, and in his philosophical work he is an antipsychologist. However, in this article, it is argued that Popper's early psychology has been pivotally important for the development of his philosophy. In particular, it is shown that Popper's …

  • Searching for the Searchlight Theory

Michel Ter Hark•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of Ideas•2003•Cited by: 3

The aim of this article is to show that one of Popper's key ideas in epistemology, his so-called theory of the searchlight, is derived from early German Denkpsychologie, in particular the theory of schematic anticipations of Otto Selz. With his theory of schematic anticipations Selz intended to replace various forms of association psychology. Likewise Popper's theory of the searchlight aims to replace empiricism in epistemology (the Bucket theory…
