  • A methodological case study of lead resource movements during the Warring States Period and Western Han Dynasty

Open Access•Chen Wang, Sarah De Ceuster et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2024•References: 5

KDE improves lead isotope analysis in big data contexts for tracing ancient glass lead sources. • Study uncovers multiple lead sources for Pb-Ba glass using large-scale isotope data from China. • The important role of lead isotope analysis and the KDE method in the authentication of museum artefacts. This methodological case study applies lead isotope analysis and Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) to explore the provenance of four lead-barium silic…

  • Exploring circulation dynamics in Han Dynasty China

Open Access•Chen Wang, Sarah De Ceuster et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2024•References: 44

This study investigates lead provenance and circulation patterns in Han Dynasty (202BC-220AD) China through the analysis of lead glazed pottery. Four objects were studied using a combination of typological study, elemental chemistry and lead isotope ratio analysis. The results for each object were compared with databases of 'lead mining districts' (lead deposits) and 'lead usage districts' (lead-containing artifacts unearthed in different spatial…

  • Transformative copper metallurgy in Chalcolithic Cyprus

    Open Access•Bleda S Düring, Bleda S Dürıng et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 29

The extraction and smelting of the rich copper ore deposits of Cyprus and the manufacture of copper objects on the island are thought to have begun during the Philia phase (c. 2400-2200 BC). Here, the authors present the results of lead isotope analysis undertaken on Late Chalcolithic (2900-2400 BC) metal objects from the site of Chlorakas-Palloures. The results facilitate a reassessment of the timing of the start of transformative copper technol…

  • A ‘match–no match‘ numerical and graphical kernel density approach to interpreting lead isotope signatures of ancient artefacts

    Open Access•Sarah De Ceuster, P Degryse•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2020•Cited by: 7•References: 17

A new method for interpreting lead isotope ratios of artefacts is presented: a numerical and graphical ‘match–no match‘ with possible raw materials. By calculating the definite integral under the kernel density estimate plot of different mining districts, using open‐access software and legacy data, the relative probability that an object is made of an ore is indicated. A match with the reference data set may indicate the true origin, while no mat…
