This paper discusses the use of the title of address,tóngzhì'comrade', in the People's Republic of China today. Empirical data are presented which were gathered to test a set of hypotheses about the unmarked and marked uses of this term. In its unmarked sense, it is a neutral term of address implying conventionalized solidarity. However, in its marked sense its use becomes a negotiation to change the social distance between Speaker and Addressee.…

Findings on language use among peers in inter-ethnic work situations in three African cities are presented. A clustering algorithm is used to display relations of similarity and dominance among clusters of speakers according to their language choice in this situation. Neighbors and Lexical Borrowings
Even with the recent interest in correlating linguistic performance with sociological variables, the tendency in discussions of lexical borrowing is to focus on the words themselves and to ignore the process. This paper argues that the process of borrowing determines what is borrowed. Most borrowings may well be nouns for items new to the borrowing language.
