Between breaking and restoring boundaries: Conceptualizing responsiveness in street-level decision-making
Street-level responsiveness is often framed as an individual binary decision: frontline workers either prioritize client needs or strictly adhere to institutional boundaries. This ethnographic study of three home care organizations in Amsterdam challenges this assumption by examining how frontline actors balance responsiveness with rules, resource limitations, and role expectations. Drawing on 140 hours of shadowing and 15 interviews with home ca…
The public library as a political symbol: A post-political reading of the demise of the consensus-model in Swedish cultural policy
Recent use of public libraries as political symbols by the radical right in their challenge of the established consensus in Swedish cultural policy is part of an ongoing (re)politicization of the field of cultural policy. This paper frames this development as part of a post-political condition of Swedish cultural and library policy. Through an analysis of previous research, policy, and policy debates, a conceptual understanding of the post-politi…
Migrants’ pathways to aged care: The role of local relationships of care in facilitating access for super-diverse older populations
The literature on older migrants often focuses on identifying the characteristics of ethnic groups that constitute ‘barriers’ for members of these populations to access care. This paper offers an alternative conceptualisation of access to care, by combining relational approaches to place and the notion of super-diversity. From this perspective, ‘access to care’ is perceived as an outcome of an individual's embeddedness in relationships of care in…

The aim is to contribute to a critical discussion of the potential implications of allowing major commercial players to take the lead in the development of …

Researching boxing bodies in Scotland: Using apprenticeship to study the embodied construction of gender in hyper masculine space
This article presents apprenticeship as an ethnographic method suitable for researching topics concerning gender and space. To use this method, the researcher takes up a practice, such as a sport. Emphasis lies in understanding one’s topic ‘by body’, and the article argues that such an embodied perspective sheds a new light on gender construction in the boxing gym. An empirical study of female amateur boxers in Scotland, conducted by the author, …
