  • Stylistic applicatives: A lens into the nature of anticausative SE

    Open Access•Cynthia M Pérez•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2026

This is an accepted article with a DOI pre-assigned that is not yet published. This paper deals with an understudied syntactic phenomenon in Chilean Spanish: stylistic applicatives. I contend that it offers evidence supporting the claim that SE contributes no meaning to anticausative predicates in Spanish. In these constructions, the presence or absence of SE does not alter the interpretation of the sentence, which shows that SE is devoid of seman…

  • Clausal doubling produces phantom islands

    Cynthia M Pérez, Matías Verdecchia•ARTICLE•The Linguistic Review•2025•References: 5

Clausal doubling in Spanish seemingly displays “island effects”, i.e., the construction is unacceptable if the doubled clause is located within a syntactic island. In this paper, we argue that these restrictions are cases of phantom islands, that is, not the result of true syntactic island violations, but rather a byproduct of the information structure of the doubling pattern. We maintain that these effects arise from the dislocated clause being …

  • Worldwide trends in underweight and obesity from 1990 to 2022: A pooled analysis of 3663 population-representative studies with 222 million children, adolescents, and adults

    Open Access•Nowell H Phelps, Rosie Singleton et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2024

BACKGROUND: Underweight and obesity are associated with adverse health outcomes throughout the life course. We estimated the individual and combined prevalence of underweight or thinness and obesity, and their changes, from 1990 to 2022 for adults and school-aged children and adolescents in 200 countries and territories. METHODS: ). For school-aged children and adolescents, we report thinness (BMI 2 SD above the median). FINDINGS: From 1990 to 20…

    Open Access•Adriana D Pons-Calvo, Cynthia M Pérez et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

In September 2020, the National Institutes of Health acted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, recognizing the critical need to combat misinformation, particularly in communities disproportionately affected by the crisis. The Community Engagement Alliance (CEAL) emerged as an initiative dedicated to fostering reliable, science-based information, diversity, and inclusion; aiming to implement effective strategies to mitigate the spread of COVID-1…

  • The Association between Food Insecurity and Insomnia Symptoms among Young Adults in Puerto Rico and the Mediating Role of Psychological Distress Symptoms

    Open Access•Natalia Vázquez-Colón, Andrea López‐cepero et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

Residents of Puerto Rico face a high burden of food insecurity (FI), which has been associated with insomnia symptoms (IS). However, this association remains understudied in Puerto Rican young adults, a vulnerable group experiencing an elevated prevalence of FI and poor sleep. We evaluated the association between FI and IS and the mediating role of psychological distress symptoms among young adults in Puerto Rico. Data are derived from the PR-OUT…

  • Clausal doubling and verum marking in Spanish

Open Access•Cynthia M Pérez, Carlos Muñoz Pérez et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Sprachwissenschaft•2023

This paper offers a description and analysis of the clausal doubling construction, and contrasts it with predicate doubling based on their formal and verum-related properties. The study shows that the behavior of both patterns can be captured by extending the analysis of predicate doubling by Muñoz Pérez and Verdecchia (2022. Residents of Puerto Rico bear a significant burden of mental health disorders, which the COVID-19 pandemic may have exacerbated. However, age-specific data on these disorders during the pandemic in Puerto Rico are scarce. This study evaluated age-related differences in the self-reported diagnosis of depression and anxiety among adults ≥18 years residing in Puerto Rico during the pandemic. An anonymous online survey was administered from December …

    Open Access•Vivian Colón‐López, Hector M Contreras-Mora et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Puerto Rico (PR) has faced environmental and public health challenges that could have significantly affected cancer screening access. Using administrative claims data from PR's Medicaid population, this study assessed trends in colorectal and breast cancer screening from 2016 to 2021, the impact of disasters in screening, and the absolute deficit in screening due to the pandemic. The monthly rates of claims were analyzed using Poisson regression.…

  • Towards a syntactic understanding of connective particles: Thefinal perophenomenon in Bahiense Spanish

    Open Access•Cynthia M Pérez•ARTICLE•Linguistic Variation•2023•References: 25

The contrastive connectorpero'but' is rigidly sentence-initial in most Spanish varieties. However, at least three Spanish dialects allow locating it at the end of a sentence. This paper discusses the properties offinal peroas attested in the dialect spoken in Bahia Blanca (Argentina), i.e., the so-calledpero bahiense. First, I demonstrate thatpero bahiensecannot be reduced to superficially similar phenomena in Spanish. Then, I offer a comparison …

Religiosity may influence COVID-19 vaccination. However, it remains unclear how religiosity is associated with beliefs toward COVID-19 and vaccination against it, particularly amongst ethnic minorities. This study examined the association between religiosity, vaccination intent, beliefs, and attitudes related to COVID-19 and vaccination among adults in Puerto Rico. • A further argument for a syncretic analysis of DOM and dative in Spanish

    Open Access•Cynthia M Pérez, Carlos Muñoz Pérez•ARTICLE•Topics in Linguistics•2020

This paper offers an argument to analyse the Spanish form /a/ as a syncretic case marker for accusative differential object marking ( dom ) and dative. The literature on free relative clauses has established that syncretism allows the repair of feature mismatches arising from contradictory selectional requirements between the matrix and the embedded predicates. By combining clitic left dislocation constructions (CLLD) and free relatives, it is sh…

The Governor of Puerto Rico designated the Puerto Rico Medical Task Force (MTF) COVID-19 to provide direct guidance and evaluation of the government response to the epidemic in Puerto Rico. Several work groups were formed within the MTF to create protocols and prov…

  • The syntax and semantics of approximate indefinites in Spanish

    Open Access•Fernando Martín Carranza, Cynthia M Pérez•ARTICLE•DELTA Documentação de Estudos em…•2020•References: 6

In Spanish, combining an indefinite plural article and a cardinal number leads to an approximative interpretation similar to that provided by approximators like 'approximately'. In this paper, we advance a syntactic and semantic analysis of these structures. We show that the construction shares a number of properties with structures containing explicit approximative elements, so it justified to assume that a particular constituent contributes the…

Open Access•NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, Honor Bixby et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2019

Body-mass index (BMI) has increased steadily in most countries in parallel with a rise in the proportion of the population who live in cities 1,2 . This has led to a widely reported view that urbanization is one of the most important drivers of the global rise in obesity 3–6 . Here we use 2,009 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight in more than 112 million adults, to report national, regional and global trends in mean B…
