Neoliberalism's Assault on Women's Citizenship
Nuisance laws in the U.S. fine or evict people for calling 911 repeatedly, and are often enforced against battered women. Using interviews with primarily poor battered women of color, I show how nuisance laws abridge their rights and prevent them from participating as citizens in a community of equals. There is little documentation about how nuisance property laws, which fine people for excessive 911 calls, affect victims of domestic violence. In St. Louis, we found that police and prosecutors believe that the law benefits victims of domestic violence by providing them with additional services. Reframing the Narrative of the Battered Women’s Movement
Many claim that the battered women's movement has been co-opted and depoliticized. We argue that this narrative of decline should be reframed as one of continual growth that has incorporated evolving feminist frameworks. We show how the movement's first generation of activists has learned from its mistakes and continues to challenge systems that fail survivors of abuse. Although a number of researchers have studied social movement coalitions, we still need to develop better ways to analyze why some initiatives succeed and others fail. In this study, I compare three different coalitions in which battered women's movement activists participated to determine the factors that made some coalitions stronger and more effective than others.
