Opportunities to Enhance the Utility of Cause of Death Information From Death Certificates
Advancements in the National Vital Statistics System to Meet the Real-Time Data Needs of a Pandemic
The National Center for Health Statistics’ (NCHS’s) National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) collects, processes, codes, and reviews death certificate data and disseminates the data in annual data files and reports. With the global rise of COVID-19 in early 2020, the NCHS mobilized to rapidly respond to the growing need for reliable, accurate, and complete real-time data on COVID-19 deaths. Within weeks of the first reported US cases, NCHS develop…
Filipinos in Rural Hawaii
Filipino immigrants and their descendants who have lived in Hawaiʻi’s plantation communities are the subjects of this thoughtful and social analysis. Here is an inside look at various facets of Filipino rural life—working conditions, courtship pattern, living patterns, living standards, celebrations, and even “chicken fighting.” Over the last couple of decades, the plantation towns of Hawaiʻi have been dying. Fewer workers are needed as land is c…
A comprehensive analysis of the mortality experience of hispanic subgroups in the United States
Although those identifying as "Hispanic or Latino" experience lower adult mortality than the more socioeconomically advantaged non-Hispanic white population, the ethnic category Hispanic conceals variation by country of origin, nativity, age, and immigration experience. The current analysis examines adult mortality differentials among 12 Hispanic subgroups by region of origin and nativity, and non-Hispanic whites, adjusting for socioeconomic and …
Linkages to Improve Mortality Data for American Indians and Alaska Natives
Racial misclassification is a well-documented weakness of mortality data taken from death certificates. As a result, mortality statistics for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) present, at best, an inaccurate and misleading assessment of mortality in this population. Studies evaluating the quality of race/ethnicity reporting on death certificates have linked data from death certificates to other data sources collected when the decedent …
St-Century Hazards of Smoking and Benefits of Cessation in the United States
BACKGROUND: Extrapolation from studies in the 1980s suggests that smoking causes 25% of deaths among women and men 35 to 69 years of age in the United States. Nationally representative measurements of the current risks of smoking and the benefits of cessation at various ages are unavailable. METHODS: We obtained smoking and smoking-cessation histories from 113,752 women and 88,496 men 25 years of age or older who were interviewed between 1997 and…

Contribution of material, occupational, and psychosocial factors in the explanation of social inequalities in health in 28 countries in Europe
OBJECTIVES: To analyse the associations between socio-economic status (SES), measured using occupation, and self-reported health, and to examine the contribution of various material, occupational and psychosocial factors to social inequalities in health in Europe. METHODS: This study was based on data from the European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS) carried out in 2003. The total sample consisted of 6038 and 6383 working men and women in 28 countr…
Changing to the 2000 Standard Million
We appreciated Krieger and Williams' discussion of changes that can be expected with the implementation of the new 2000 standard population for age-adjusting mortality data.1 We would like to address the authors' recommendation that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) “should either present ‘bridge’ data allowing comparisons of contemporary rates adjusted to the 1940 and 2000 standard or e…
Persistence and Change in Asian Identity among Children of Intermarried Couples
In recent years, a significant amount of attention has been devoted to the survival of ethnicity among multiracial people in the United States. This concern is especially evident in the case of the offspring of Asian-Anglo couples. While scholars have speculated on the extent to which Asian ethnicity will continue to persist among multiracial children, little empirical work has addressed this concern. In this analysis, we use a multilevel model t…
Marriage Markets and Marital Choice
This article presents a search model of marital choice. We tested the hypothesis that demographic shortages of suitable marital partners not only lower the probability of marriage, but increase the likelihood that never-married women will either: (a) marry men with characteristics dissimilar to their own or (b) marry men with low socioeconomic status. This analysis was accomplished using data from the 1979-1986 waves of the National Longitudinal …
Marriage Markets and the Paradox of Mexican American Nuptiality
The deteriorating economic circumstances of disadvantaged minorities has given new urgency to research on racial and ethnic differences in family formation (Jencks, 1992; Wilson, 1987). Despite a turbulent history, scholarly discourse is now converging around issues related to the intersection of economic opportunity, culture, and the growing racial gulfs in marriage and childbearing (Cherlin, 1992). For example, the conventional wisdom is that t…
