  • Relative Impact of Underreporting and Desistance on the Dark Figure of Sexual Recidivism

    Open Access•Nicholas Scurich, Richard S John•ARTICLE•Behavioral Sciences & the Law•2025

Sexual recidivism rates based on arrests or convictions underestimate actual reoffending due to underreporting. A previous Monte Carlo simulation estimated actual recidivism rates under various reporting and conviction assumptions but did not account for desistance—the decreasing likelihood of reoffending over time. This study addresses that gap by incorporating a 12.3% annual desistance rate (from a well‐known empirical study) and exploring its …

  • Sunk cost effects for thee but not for me

Open Access•Zhiqin Chen, Şule Güney et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica•2024

The sunk-cost effect (SCE) refers to the tendency to continue pouring resources into a venture due to unrecoverable prior investments, despite a potentially unfavorable outcome ahead. In the two studies reported here, we aimed to explore the issue of whether the SCE is susceptible to the involvement of others by differentiating the individual who would incur the cost (i.e., self vs. someone close vs. stranger) as well as the modality of the prima…

  • Securing public spaces

Katie Byrd, Kevin Kapadia et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Risk Research•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The use of security countermeasures at public venues has escalated dramatically over the past 20 years. We present a study of public venue patrons (N = 1276) examining how public perceptions of efficacy and intrusiveness of four security measures deployed at three different public assembly venues in the U.S. impact planned attendance. Enhanced use of these countermeasures, —Closed-Circuit Televisions (CCTVs), security guards, metal detectors, and…

  • Measuring Congruence in Problem Definition of Latino Patients and Their Psychotherapists

    Open Access•Sylvanna M Vargas, Richard S John et al.•ARTICLE•Hispanic Journal of Behavioral…•2019•References: 22

The current study developed a mixed-methods coding scheme to explore the degree of correspondence between Latino patients’ and their psychotherapists’ descriptions of the presenting problems. We interviewed 34 patients and clinicians (17 dyads) following an initial therapy session. Using a theoretical thematic approach, we generated a list of problem areas reported in participants’ descriptions. Independent coders reliably rated the presence and …

  • The Relationship Between Daily Marital Interaction, Work, and Health-Promoting Behaviors in Dual-Earner Couples

    Open Access•Diana M Doumas, Gayla Margolin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2003•Cited by: 16•References: 31

This article examines the spillover and crossover patterns between an individual's daily work experiences and health-promoting behaviors and daily marital interaction in 49 dual-earner couples. Husbands and wives separately completed daily diaries that included questions about work experiences, health-promoting behaviors, and marital interactions over 42 consecutive days. Pooled time series regression analyses were performed to examine transmissi…

  • A Typology of Maritally Violent Men and Correlates of Violence in a Community Sample

Open Access•Catherine Delsol, Gayla Margolin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2003•Cited by: 5•References: 44

This study empirically tests A. Holtzworth-Munroe and G. L. Stuart's (1994) typology of male batterers in a community sample. Latent class analyses based on severity of physical aggression, generality of violence, and psychopathology partially replicated the Holtzworth-Munroe and Stuart typology by identifying 3 types of violent men: family-only, medium-violence, and generally violent/psychologically distressed. Separate groupings of borderline/d…

  • Observed sibling interaction

Osnat Erel, Gayla Margolin et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1998•Cited by: 3•References: 5

The study examines whether the link between the marital relationship and sibling interaction is direct or mediated by the mother-child relationship. Seventy-three same-sex siblings pairs aged 3 years 6 months to 8 years 6 months were observed during free play. Mothers completed questionnaires assessing marital functioning and their relationship with their 2 children. Results indicated that older siblings' negative behavior is linked with negative…

  • Specialization in Violence

    Open Access•Patricia A Brennan, PATRICIA BRENNAN et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology•1989•Cited by: 10•References: 11

This study examines the criminal arrest records of a Danish birth cohort of 28,884 men to test the hypothesis that specialization exists for violent offending. Property offending is included for comparison. Specialization in violence is found to exist for offenders with more than three arrests, and specialization in property offending, for offenders with fewer than four arrests. Knowledge of past violent offending is discussed as a potentially va…
