On the coloniality of nature and power in energy transitions
Development in global production networks? Wind energy and socio-ecological conflicts in La Guajira, Colombia
Bringing global production network (GPN) research into conversation with a relational concept of territory, the article analyzes how a wind-GPN touches ground in La Guajira, Colombia. It offers a novel contribution in two regards: First, it aims to contribute to bridging GPN and critical development studies, focusing on the ambivalent developmental implications caused by the coupling of La Guajira with global production. Second, it traces controv…

What happened to agroecology? Tracing Actors’ (Power) relations and the seeming dissipation of transition dynamics in Argentina’s Río Negro Valley
In today’s context of polycrisis, agroecology has gained global attention as a transformative alternative for food systems. Although the COVID-19 pandemic initially spurred agroecological practices, these dynamics proved difficult to sustain. This paper explores the seeming dissipation of agroecological transition efforts in Argentina through a political ecology lens, drawing on a case study of the Colectivo Agroecológico (ColAE) in the Valle Inf…
Towards a global perspective on interrelated green hydrogen transitions
Green Hydrogen (GH2) is widely considered a key element in decarbonising industries and energy systems to mitigate climate change. The EU aims to increase the use of renewable (or green) hydrogen to 20 million tonnes by 2030, 50 % of which will have to be imported, mostly from the Global South, while Germany projects an even higher hydrogen import share (50–70 %). The dependence of GH2 transitions in the Global North on imports from the Global So…

Making low-carbon energy sustainable
Towards a multi-color hydrogen production network? Competing imaginaries of development in northern Patagonia, Argentina
(Green) hydrogen has recently gained importance as a key element in the transition to a low-carbon energy future, sparking a boom in possible production regions. This article aims at situating incipient hydrogen production in the Argentine province of Río Negro within a global production network (GPN). The early configuration of the hydrogen-GPN includes several stakeholders and is contested in many ways. To explore the possible materialization o…
Legitimising lithium mining
The global green energy transition towards a low-carbon economy via decarbonisation is in-creasing the demand for and exploitation of so-called critical resources, including lithium. The growing demand for lithium, which, as a raw material, is primarily found in countries of the global South, has sparked a new debate on the global interdependencies, unequal ecological and economic exchange and unevenness of the energy transition between the globa…
Framing social-ecological transformation as a geographical concept
Global challenges call for timely social-ecological transformation. There is a substantial amount of literature on social-ecological transformation, increasingly replacing and going beyond 'sustainability'. However, the concept itself is used very inconsistently. This paper aims at identifying and systematizing the strains of argumentation that encompass the social-ecological transformation. Adding German-speaking literature to the Anglophone deb…
Territorio, territorialidad y territorialización en las redes de producción globales
Global production networks (GPN) provide a powerful multi-scalar approach for analyzing the organization of production, but lack the means for conceptualizing social-ecological issues. Territory and territoriality underscore the epistemological character of socio-environmental problems. Territoriality is an underdeveloped conceptual resource for analyzing a GPN’s territorial configuration. Discussing different contextual conceptions of territory,…

Towards a climate change consensus
Following the goal of a post-fossil economy, institutional actors promote techno-managerial solution strategies, for example the green economy and the bioeconomy. While these strategies focus on technological progress to decouple economic growth from carbon dioxide emissions, the associated additional demand for raw materials causes a new global land and resource rush. In this article, we contribute to the debate on climate change commodities and…
Green colonialism in Latin America? Towards a new research agenda for the global energy transition
Drawing on various empirical examples (e.g. lithium, green hydrogen, REDD+), several studies point out that the global energy transition continues to be based on the geographic externalization of labour, natural resources, and sinks. The energy transition thus increases the pressure on natural resources in Latin America and reproduces the continent’s position as the world’s raw material supplier. This is increasingly referred to as ‘green colonia…
Mining companies, indigenous communities, and the state
Based on intensive and long-term field research and document reviews, this article compares the historic evolution of lithium mining in Chile and Argentina. We highlight national development discourses and government regulatory frameworks in both countries. We illustrate and assess the diverse perceptions and strategies of local actors. Finally, we discuss the socio-spatial materialization of lithium mining in terms of power relations, ecology, a…
Global production networks and natural resource extraction
The article examines how to adapt the global production network (GPN) approach to situations of natural resource extraction. Based on an integration of a political ecology perspective into GPN research, we exemplarily apply the GPN framework to the primary sector. Based on extensive qualitative fieldwork regarding Argentine lithium mining and Brazilian soy agribusiness we illustrate that particularly a political ecological environmental perspecti…
