Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes and factors associated with antimicrobial resistance in Invasive pneumococcal disease cases in Latvia, 2012–2022
Background Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major cause of Invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), including bacteremic pneumonia, septicemia, and meningitis. The introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) has significantly reduced the incidence of IPD caused by vaccine-covered serotypes. However, serotype replacement and antimicrobial resistance remain concerns. In Latvia, vaccination against pneumococcal disease was introduced into the NI…
Excess mortality associated with the Covid-19 pandemic in Latvia: A population-level analysis of all-cause and noncommunicable disease deaths in 2020
All-cause mortality and mortality from circulatory diseases significantly increased in Latvia during the first pandemic year. All-cause excess mortality substantially exceeded reported COVID-19-related deaths, implying COVID-19-related mortality during was significantly underestimated. Increasing mortality from circulatory diseases suggests a negative cumulative effect of COVID-19 exposure and reduced access to healthcare services for NCD patient…
How Are Adolescents Sleeping? Adolescent Sleep Patterns and Sociodemographic Differences in 24 European and North American Countries
PURPOSE: Insufficient and poor sleep patterns are common among adolescents worldwide. Up to now, the evidence on adolescent sleep has been mostly informed by country-specific studies that used different measures and age groups, making direct comparisons difficult. Cross-national data on adolescent sleep that could inform nations and international discussions are lacking. We examined the sleep patterns of adolescents across 24 countries and by gen…
Education, Special Needs, and Autism in the Baltic States: Policy Mapping in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania
The Soviet occupation of the Baltic States followed by joining the United Nations (UN) and European Union make these countries an interesting point of comparison in the development of autism and education policy. This study investigates how policies changed following the transition and how the right and access to education are facilitated for autistic children by performing a path dependence analysis. All Baltic States created new education polic…
Estimation of body weight and stature in Latvian hospitalized seniors
Introduction. Weight and height are important measurements for many medical procedures. They are difficult to measure in bedridden patients. They can be estimated through equations based on anthropometric measurements generated in other countries, however their adequacy in different ethnical groups has been poorly studied.Objective. To confirm the adequacy of formulae suggested in literature and to develop weight and height predicting equations f…
Correlation between driving-related skill and alcohol use in young-adults from six European countries: The TEN-D by Night Project
This field study confirms previous experimental data on the negative impact of alcohol use on driving-related skill, supporting regulations and educational campaigns aimed at discouraging driving after consumption of psychoactive substances
SP6-63 Analysis of newborn mortality due to congenital anomalies associated with perinatal period risk factors
Background Congenital anomalies play a significant role in perinatal mortality. Congenital anomalies are a cause of death in a third of all babies that die in the first year of life in Latvia. Methods The Register of Newborns was used to identify all babies born 2000–2007 and who were diagnosed with a congenital anomaly (Q00-Q99). HRs with 95% CI were estimated using Cox regression model adjusted for mother's age, newborns' gender, different comp…
A European study on alcohol and drug use among young drivers: The Tend by Night study design and methodology
The project methodology should provide some relevant advantages over traditional survey systems. The main strengths of the study include the large and multicentric sample, the objective measurement of substance assumption (which is typically self-reported), the application of a portal survey technique and the simultaneous evaluation of several psychoactive substances
