  • Engaging in politics through youth transitions

Nuno De Almeida Alves•ARTICLE•Journal of Youth Studies•2023•References: 14

This article explores the potential of youth transitions to explain and contextualize young people's engagements with politics. It starts with the discussion of the alleged detachment between young people and politics, recently challenged by research on alternative engagements and Do It Ourselves (DIO) politics (Pickard, Sarah. 2019. Politics, Protest and Young People. Political Participation and Dissent in the 21 Century Britain. London: Palgrav…

  • Children and the internet in Portugal

Open Access•Ana Nunes De Almeida, Nuno De Almeida Alves et al.•ARTICLE•Sociologia Problemas e Práticas•2016

On the basis of a questionnaire survey carried out among Portuguese children, this article aims to characterise their possession and usage of the internet. The survey ascertained that the children can be grouped under four distinct user profiles — “confirmed cybernauts”, “applied students”, “inveterate gamers” and “beginners” — and demonstrates that these profiles are highly conditioned by variables such as a child’s sex and age and his or her pa…

Analyzing what are the more widespread uses of this platform in terms of literature, we confront the use given to it in our country. This study integrates information from one research project with 2674 students and 324 teachers. Both the students and the teachers were interviewed in a deep way about the use they do of the Moodle Platform. In terms of results, we find …

  • Internet, children and space

Open Access•Ana Nunes De Almeida, Ana Delicado et al.•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2014•Cited by: 6•References: 5

At the dawn of modernity, in the 18th century, space became a critical category in defining generational attributes and locations. However, borders that previously tightly isolated adults and children are nowadays continuously challenged and modified by a constant and ubiquitous use of new information and communication technologies, namely the Internet, blurring notions of ‘private’ and ‘public’, ‘outdoors’ and ‘indoors’, ‘real’ and ‘virtual’. Gi…

  • Another ‘Missing Middle’? The marginalised majority of tertiary-educated youth in Portugal during the economic crisis

    David C Cairns, K Growiec et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Youth Studies•2014•Cited by: 20•References: 8

This article explores the present and imagined future impact of the Portuguese economic crisis among tertiary-educated youth in Lisbon. The results of a quantitative survey and follow-up interviews illustrate that this impact is widespread and multifaceted, ranging from a perceived devaluation of educational credentials and a loss of faith in the local job market to feeling unable to contemplate having a family of one’s own. This evidence suggest…

  • Time projections

    Open Access•Renato Miguel Carmo, Frederico Cantante et al.•ARTICLE•Time & Society•2014•Cited by: 26•References: 19

The European and Portuguese labour markets have undergone significant changes in recent years. The high rates of unemployment have been accompanied by precarious employment - a phenomenon that is affecting younger people most. This article analyses how the future employment prospects of young people with few qualifications and/or on low pay are both represented and projected. By means of a content analysis of 80 interviews with young working peop…

  • Children and digital diversity

Open Access•Ana Nunes De Almeida, Nuno De Almeida Alves et al.•ARTICLE•Childhood•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 17

This article discusses the heterogeneity in children's appropriation and use of the internet that make up contemporary digital divides. Based on a survey of Portuguese children in mandatory education (8- to 17-year-olds), it relies on multivariate statistical procedures to build a topological mapping of internet use patterns. Variations in digital practices and parental mediation are analysed in relation to social backgrounds and demographic trai…
