Introduction to the Special Issue
Social support: Mapping the construct
Social support is a construct with multiple dimensions that can be approached at multiple levels. Findings from a variety of disciplines and recognition of its bidirectional nature can help map the construct. Bidirectionality is a process that requires attention to moderators, such as, gender, cultural change, and personal development, together with the relationship between the receiver and the provider of support. Both close personal ties and we…
Social Support and Adjustment to a Novel Social Environment
The present article aims to examine the ways in which social support may affect the adaptation of individuals to a novel social environment. A distinctive feature of this research was the assessment of social support both before and after entering a completely new network of social relationships. A cohort of international exchange high school students (N = 242) was administered a battery of self-report ques tionnaires dealing with personality tra…
Personal characteristics, relationship quality, and social support perceptions and behavior in young adult romantic relationships
This study investigated three questions: (1) Do both personal characteristics and perceived qualities of romantic relationships contribute to partners’perceptions of support? (2) Do these variables predict supportive behavior in partner interactions that can be observed by others? (3) How do situational characteristics affect the predictors of observed supportive behavior? Eighty‐six university undergraduates and their romantic partners completed…
Assessing the Quality of Personal Relationships
We report two studies investigating the psychometric properties and construct validity of the Quality of Relationships Inventory (QRI), a self-report measure of support, conflict, and depth in specific family and peer relationships. Study 1 showed that the QRI scales possess high internal consistency, are stable across a period of 1 year, show moderate agreement between participants' perceptions of the same relationship, and predict depressive sy…

Simultaneous Assessment of Perceived Global and Relationship-Specific Support
Perceived global social support and support from specific relationships are not synonymous, yet existing measures typically assess only one or the other. However, it might be possible to simultaneously assess both using the same instrument. In two studies, the reliability and validity of scores derived for specific relationship categories from the Social Support Questionnaire were examined. Separate scores were developed for mother, father and a …

Social Support: Global and Relationship-Based Levels of Analysis
This article reviews the development of a program of research on social support. It began with the construction of an instrument to assess overall support and determination of its correlation with various indicators of adjustment and performance. This led to inquiries into how people at different support levels behave socially and how they perceive the behavior of others. The results of these studies led, in turn, to focusing attention on the rel…
Investigating the antecedents of perceived social support: Parents' views of and behavior toward their children
College students' perceptions of generalized social support were investigated from a developmental perspective. University students (N=262) completed questionnaires concerning general and relationship-specific social support. Questionnaires were mailed to students' parents and a sibling. Student reports of past and present parental relationships predicted parents' questionnaire return. Parents' views of students' personal characteristics predicte…

Social Support: The Search for Theory
Social support research has suffered from a constricted range of methodological approaches and poorly developed theory. A more theory-driven approach would not only be conceptually valuable, but would also provide impetus for the methodological improvements needed for empirical advances. The time has come for a diversity of approaches that ultimately can be integrated so as to reflect the complex phenomena currently being explored under the rubri…
Social Support and Interactional Processes: A Triadic Hypothesis
A theoretical view suggests that the impact of social support is based on interactions among three variables: (1) motivations and expectations of providers and recipients, (2) the nature of the relationships in which the supportive exchanges occur and (3) the type of situation at which the supportive behaviors are directed. We discuss research findings that illustrate the need for such an interactional approach to clarify conflicting findings and…
Interrelations of social support measures: Theoretical and practical implications
A Brief Measure of Social Support: Practical and Theoretical Implications
Two studies leading to the development of a short form of the Social Support Questionnaire (SSQ) are reported. In Study 1 three items selected for high correlations with the total score (SSQ3) were administered to 182 university students together with several personality measures. SSQ3 had acceptable test-retest reliability and correlations with personality variables similar to those of the SSQ. Internal reliability was marginal although acceptab…
Social support as an individual difference variable: Its stability, origins, and relational aspects
Recording and recall of personal events: Effects on cognitions and behavior
Experimentally provided social support
Cognitive interference: Situational determinants and traitlike characteristics
Assessing social support: The Social Support Questionnaire
A measure of social support, the Social Support Questionnaire (SSQ), is described and four empirical studies employing it are described. The SSQ yields scores for (a) number of social supports, and (b) satisfaction with social support that is available. Three of the studies deal with the SSQ's psychometric properties, its correations with measures of personality and adjustment, and the relationship of the SSQ to positive and negative life changes…

Concomitants of social support: Social skills, physical attractiveness, and gender
This study investigated the naturally occuring relationship between social support, as measured by self-report and social skills as measured by self-report, a variety of behavioral measures, and rated physical attractiveness. Subjects were 84 male and 84 female introductory psychology students selected on the basis of high and low number scores on the Social Support Questionnaire. The subjects were videotaped in two dyadic situations with a same …

Concomitants of social support: Attitudes, personality characteristics, and life experiences
Determining the extent of social support and its consequences and personality correlates has been of increasing interest to researchers. The two studies reported here deal with the possibility that people low in social support are characterized by rigid, authoritarian personality characteristics and a lack of confidence in the support that informal social networks can provide. Groups differing in social support were compared on scales measuring a…

Life Events, Social Support, and Illness
Positive and negative life events and social support were correlated with illness among Navy Submarine School students. Negative, but not positive, life events in the recent past were related to reports of illness. Although social support by itself was not related to illness reports, the relationship between negative life events and illness was stronger among subjects with low rather than high levels of social support. The results suggest the imp…
