Professional learning through the lens of boundary crossing in an international physical education and sport pedagogy project
The aim of this research is to analyse the professional learning experiences of eight physical education and sport pedagogy (PESP) academics involved in an international project focused on supporting how coaches could prioritise meaningful experiences for children aged 6–12 years in youth sport contexts. Project participants partnered with coaches from youth sport clubs to create an accessible resource that volunteer coaches could use. Our focus …
Restorative practice in PE? Implementing restorative approaches in the Irish primary physical education classroom
In recent years, there has been growing recognition of physical education (PE) as a vital platform for fostering holistic child wellbeing and thus supporting the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive elements of wellbeing. However, the approaches to promoting such development must continuously evolve in response to changing societal needs. While there is an increasing educational discourse on the effects of restorative practice (RP) on schoo…
Using Collaborative self-study to support professional learning in initial teacher education
Collaborative self-study provides teacher educators with opportunities to enhance professional learning. This paper explores how three teacher educators used this approach to support their learning while introducing the pedagogy of Meaningful Physical Education (MPE) to pre-service teachers (PSTs). Thematic analysis of reflections, critical friend feedback and online conversations were used to generate three themes: Collaborative Self-study helpe…
Turning over a new leaf
Perceptions of quality physical education (QPE) can vary among teachers, due to the many discourses influencing physical education (PE) provision. There are concerns that the educative purposes of PE are not being fulfilled in its current state. This study aims to investigate PE specialism graduates’ (PESGs’) understanding of QPE, and how these views were shaped. Eleven semi-structured interviews were carried out with PESGs, guided by preceding s…
Fitting in or standing out? The organisational socialisation of early career physical education specialism graduates through a micropolitical lens
The recent emergence of primary school generalist teachers with physical education (PE) expertise has addressed calls for some form of specialisation in primary PE provision in Ireland ( Marron et al., 2018 ). It was hoped that these teachers could advance the quality of PE taught within schools, through their own teaching and by supporting colleagues ( Ní Chróinín, 2018 ). Despite PE specialism graduates (PESGs) developing teaching orientations …
‘Just let them have a say!’ Students’ perspective of student voice pedagogies in primary physical education
While student voice pedagogies have been cited as a powerful educational tool in engaging children in the learning process, the perspectives of primary-aged children on using these pedagogies as part of everyday practice need to be considered. Within this research, student voice pedagogies were implemented as part of one teacher’s regular primary physical education (PE) practice and children’s perspectives of these pedagogies were explored. Quali…
Learning to facilitate student voice in primary physical education
Student voice pedagogies in physical education (PE) offer teachers a mechanism to promote meaningful experiences by actively engaging students in decision-making regarding their learning. Over one academic year, the experiences of one generalist classroom teacher's enactment of student voice pedagogies in their primary PE practice were explored within a Self-Study of Teaching and Teacher Education Practice (S-STTEP) frame. Data sources included p…
Rate of Growth of Preschool-Age Children’s Oral Language and Decoding Skills Predicts Beginning Writing Ability
Research Findings: This study examined the extent to which children’s development and growth in oral language and literacy skills during the early childhood period predicted writing ability in the primary grades. Participants were 313 children who were tested on a battery of oral language and literacy measures at four time points, beginning during preschool (M age = 4.2 years) and spaced approximately 6 months apart over 1.5 years. Results provid…
Exploring the Influence of the Community-Based Sports Club Environment on the Support and Development of Volunteer Women Coaches in Ireland
In Ireland, the majority of coaches at non-elite level are volunteers and within the female-only team sport of women's Gaelic football, most qualified coaches are women. Yet, little is known on the club specific experiences of volunteer women coaches in non-elite sport. To address this gap, 11 women coaches, from three Gaelic Football clubs, were interviewed to explore the influence of the community-based club environment on their support and dev…

Identifying learning in a coaching community of practice
Collaboration through coaching communities of practice (CCoPs) has been proposed as a means to support coaches' learning (Culver & Trudel, 2006 Culver, D., & Trudel, P. (2006). Cultivating coaches' communities of practice: developing the potential for learning through interactions. In R. Jones (Ed.), The sports coach as educator (pp. 97–112). Routledge. Longitudinal Changes Among Latino/a Immigrant Parental Acculturation and Extra-Familial Immigration-Related Stress
Foreign-born Latino/a immigrants currently make up 12.9% of the total U.S. population. Latino/a immigrants continue to be exposed to widespread health and mental health care disparities. Scholarship focused on the needs of Latino/a immigrants continues to be characterized by multiple gaps. Latino/a immigrants and their families, particularly those with low family annual incomes, are exposed to multiple types of immigration-related stress. However…
Opportunity knocks
Recent studies suggest school communities accept the goods and services of external providers uncritically. Considering the pivotal role played by teachers in curriculum and policy enactment, this paper explores how and why teachers in Ireland advocate for, and engage with, the services and resources of one particular external provider, the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). This paper draws upon data generated from a purposive sample of teachers…
Playing to our strengths
Class swapping is the process whereby a generalist primary school teacher with a particular subject expertise and interest swaps classes with a teacher colleague and they teach each other’s class a specific area of the curriculum. Instances of class swapping for physical education (PE) have been noted in many countries, but there is currently no explicit research into this practice. Consequently, this research investigated the experiences of two …

Attaining the Active School Flag
The provision of regular physical activity opportunities has the potential to have positive health benefits for children. This study used qualitative interviews and focus groups to examine the experiences of two Irish primary school communities as they worked to attain an Active School Flag. The data suggest that engagement in this formal physical activity initiative impacts positively on children’s engagement in physical activity. Schools were e…
